i was looking at a rack of Danelectro Dead On 67 Electric Guitars at sam ash the other week and initially thought, those look cool. then i saw they were made in korea (maybe china... sorry for my fuzzy memory) and thought hmmm... probably junk. what are anyone/everyones opinions about these? do they play nice? do they sound nice.... what is the reason for the re-issue?

The orginal Danelectro's (1960's) were pretty cool just because they were different, funky looking and funky sounding. The modern Danelectros (in my opinion) are just like any other low end budget guitar. They are adequate but not really satisfying. Let's put it this way, do you see successful musicians playing them? I'm willing to bet that his Dano has been so heavily modded as to be unrecognizeable from it's original made in China form. Same as Jeff Healy's highly modified Squier Strat.

Hello Zenbone,

Why the reissue? well each year about they have been
rereleasing one of their previous models.

How's the Dead on play? Pretty comfortable a bit like a
mexican fender standard neck in feel. The satin finish
paintjob looks and feels real nice. I do think is somewhat
fragile from examples that I've seen and played in stores.
The tremolo --- totally pathetic this is the weak link, downfall
of this axe.

How's it sound? Great to me and many others
These little single coil lipstick pickups are on the weak side
nestled in their silver steel home their fully sheilded so these
are a quiet pickup.

Value? Well at $360 not a inexpensive instrument frankly thats
to much, but people like em. Another local guitarist got one
last week at GC for $280 thats more like it.

Clearly if your your not shure if you like these guitars. You don't.
I like em. Will I buy one? Not until I get a Job.

Here is a good link.

This is what they look like --- wild colors.

Cheers.

I have an original 1957 U1. It's a seriously cool guitar. The new ones IMO are just as good. They still sound and play pretty much like my 57 but seem to be built a tiny bit better.

damn those look cool! I kinda want that green one now. I've always been curious about these guitars since they're so odd and retro looking, but never had a chance to play one.

They are fun guitars but once that inital newness wears off it's just a low priced guitar in my opinion. never owned, just played a few

Dano's have always been sorta cool-but-in-a-weird-way.

They can play and sound pretty good. i have an old one. but they have never been a top quality instrument. They were never made with any premium parts, or top end woods. What they were, were department store quality guitars.

They have always had style though. A look that screams 50's style 'house of tomorrow' kind of vibe.(Can't you just see one leaning up against the green sectional couch, with a martini glass on the artist's palette shaped TV tray, and the radar range in the background?) a brain child of post-war industrial design.

Mine sounds great, and has a tone that's pretty much unique. But I don't think there's anything about them that should command any kind of high price. If you can get one for fairly cheap then you'll have a nice guitar for the price, but don't expect hand xrafted quality.

I have a 59 reissue and I like it a lot.
Has a pretty cool personality and a sound of its own.
The wood took a bit of time to settle down (looked like it wasn't dried well), the neck is a bit skinny and crammed, but overall I really like it a lot.
The cool factor is pretty high and gets looked at everywhere I take it.
For the money I paid for it (215 euros brand new), it's a lot of guitar.

Here's another.

Mods: Upgraded Tuners, Tunable bridge and perhaps replaced the aluminum nut, I can't recall. The rest is stock. I put the same bridge on my Baritone. I worked there in the late 90s. They were certainly cool guitars, and there are more than a few out there with spectacularly flammed maple necks just because they factory sent them that way.

My only regret is I should have bought more when I worked there.
