What do you think of the sound quality for mic'ing amps with a Sennheiser e609 microphone?

They're okay, a lot like an SM57. But I will say this:

A lot of guys buy them because of the physical design, i.e., it looks cool hanging by it's mic cable over the face of the amp.

This means you are always micing it with the mic right up against the grille, which I don't think is ever the optimum mic placement.

But if you're playing down at the Cruds 'n' Suds Bar 'n' Grille on a Saturday night, I don't suppose it matters. :)

Yea the design of the Sennheiser e609 makes it much easier to mic an amp indeed. You really don't need a mic stand as it can easily drape down right against the speaker grill of the amp.

What did you think about the Blue Snowball condenser mic compared to the two dynamic mics for close mic'ing amps?

Yes, if you don't mind always putting the mic in a less-than-optimum position.

I've never used a Snowball, but I like condensers on guitar amps. I almost always mic an amp in the studio with two or more mics, and I don't close mic with condensers, but, then... I'm not doing live sound. Like I say, does it really matter down at the Cruds 'n' Suds?

I use the Audix cab grabber :

I also really dig Heil's PR-30 and the AT4047 on guitar cabs...
The PR-30 sounds good on a lot of things. Even though it is a dynamic, it sounds like a cross between a dynamic and a ribbon with the full range of a LD condenser!! This mic flew under the radar for years because people thought that it was strictly a mic designed for voice overs. Turns out it's amazing for many applications!

Wasn't the PR-30 just introduced a couple of years ago?

Here is a much better video, specially the audio quality. Better clarity in the audio recording and much easier to tell the difference in tone qualities of each microphone. I'm deleting all previous microphone comparison videos in yourube as this one is by far superior to the rest I've done IMHO.

Do the "microphone blind test" and see if you can correctly identify the microphones. I bet some of maybe surprised by the results.
