Can someone PLEASE explain to me why the artificially aged and stressed guitars were ever conceived and marketed, and WHY would any real musician want one? I have a theory that the high prices on big name guitars are based on a new phenomenon...the WANNBE guitarthusiast, who can't play a record player, can't dance, can't sing, but has boocoo money and buys guitars as furniture....

I believe it is personal preference...for me...I like my guitars to be in pristine condition...any nicks, scratches, etc I want to be from me..but some folks like the look so live and let live.

Welcome.

I tend to agree with you on SOME of your points. Notwithstanding, good luck with the plethora of defensive backlash you're probably going to get on this.

I am one of those non-relic people myself, but IMO if someone wants something like that, shouldn't they be able to buy it? Fender is making a killing on those Road Worn and Reliced Custom Shop guitars because there is a market for them.

Yessss....I probably came on a bit STRONG....I love the way Clapton's Blackie has wear marks all over the maple neck.....I've been playing my '91 Mex Strat for years in nightclubs, and the neck is STILL pristine...

Sweat, skin, fingernails and blood make the marks on an old guitar....it seems disingenuous to fake them.....

'Don't get it at all. Kinda like buying a pre-rusted, bashed up new car. Maybe the same people buy distressed guitars as by "pre-worn, ripped" jeans.

Poseurs?

I think Keith Richards was the first person to request a reliced guitar back in the 80's. He didn't want to bring his main guitar on tour any more so he asked the Custom Shop to recreate it. Kinda shots holes is all you points doesn't it.

I don't see anything wrong with the relic guitars but the fact that Fender seems to be pushing them more that the others as far as advertising. I think they should've been left in the custom shop. Fender should've focused more on bringing back some of the older styles that were discontinued or even put a little more of the time and money in new styles just to keep the market competitive instead of waisting it all away on a fake relic guitar.

I think a lot of players like this reliced, distressed look for two reasons. First, they don't have to be so carefull not to bang them up, cause they already are and (Two), The players I know who have one of these guitars tell me its cool letting everyone else believe that they've had the guitar for years and years, and all the wear is thiers and that it has all this mojo and character now.

They were conceived when Keith Richards got some new guitars delivered for a tour and didn't like the look... he sent them back and asked Fender to "rough them up a bit," which they did. So much for your "wannabee" concept.

Relics (while I don't own one) aren't furniture: they're stage props. Just as a musician will choose their stage clothing to project a certain image, they may choose the style of their instrument for the same reason. It wouldn't seem right to see Keith Richards with a shiny new guitar.

So, by dragging out this stupid argument for what must surely be the 9,732nd time since the creation of the Internet, you don't, as you hoped, reveal yourself as a cool 'n' groovy seasoned guitar player, but as an amateur who has spent far more time at Guitar Center than on stage.

Also, it's spelled "beaucoup," not "boocoo," and is pronounced "bo-COO."

Well, yeah, essentially.

You think this argument actually MEANS something?
