John Mayer? Don't even get me started. He's just a god among girls IMHO :)
I won't argue about it either, it's just an opinion you get what you paid for it.

Anymore Fender gives a sig guitar to any popular top 40 clown that comes down the pike. They kind of ruined the whole signature thing for me. It used to be more of a tribute thing than a money making corporate thing. They should be ashamed of themselves.

Again just my opinion, not trying to start an argument.

Right on! I think I suggested in a different thread, that Fender should just supply a Sharpie with each guitar...then you could have any signature you want :D

Alain and Doc bring up an interesting story. Beck went to Fender to have some custom guitars made and they came up with a Strat which had the Wilkerson roller nut,Sperzel tuners, two point vibrato and lace sensor pickups. Fender wanted him to do and endorsement deal but he said no and that turned into the Strat plus series. Funny this came up because he just spoke about it in guitar and bass

Duchossoir's book shows a "1987 Strat Plus in Graffiti Yellow a.k.a.Rebelyella"

"Beck had asked Fender to make him a '62 Reissue finished in yellow. ....what he wanted was a guitar painted in the same color as the souped up Ford featured in the movie 'American Graffiti'. ......at that stage it could be said that the Strat Plus prototype was put together with Jeff Beck in mind." The rest of the narrative reitterates the substance of your commentary.

I thought the first signature electric solidbody was the Bigsby Merle Travis model. Then I suppose the Les Paul would come after that, wouldnt it?

Who was the very first Signature Series Guitar produced for? What was the idea behind starting these guitars? Just curious. :?:

Not surprised that this thread is taking a different turn, but back to the OP.
If you are talking Fender, A.R. Duchossoir's book documents the parallel development of both the Clapton and the Malmsteen projects and there issues regarding contract signing vis a vis production starts on those two with respect to which came first. In the same time frame there was a 7-string that did quite make it. I cannot retrieve the last name of the artist(first name Alex) at this writing, not having access to my library, but I am sure that one of us out there will.

That one...

In the '67 catalogue, Gibson had the Johnny Smith, Tal Farlow, Barney Kessel, Trini Lopez and Byrdland.

Mosrite's The Ventures models of '65 are legendary and magnificent.

Wouldn't the Mary Kaye Strat pre-date the Clapton Strat? I think it came out in 56. Just checking as it may not be considered a signature model but still rates a mention.

My guitar tech tells me that Fender people have advised him that the company is about selling guitars, not fixing them.

Nick Lucas 1928 Gibson flat-top
Les Paul 1952 Gibson
Chet Atkins 1954 Gretsch
Marry Kay doesn't count its just the nickname for a blonde
James Burton (dunno the year, thinkin it was 88/89) Fender tele
Eric Clapton 1987 Fender Stratocaster
Y Malmsteen 1987 Fender Stratocaster

both Burton and Beck were the 1st artists that fender talked w/ but the EC was the 1st made and available followed closely by the Malmsteen.

Mary Kaye (Mary Kay is the cosmetics), and yes, it does count because it was a limited edition in 1956 promoted by the Mary Kaye Trio, and what was special was that it had gold hardware.

Gibson had a Walter Boehm model harp guitar in 1923.
Harmony had a Roy Rogers acoustic in 1954.
Guild had a Johnny Smith Award electric in 1956.
Gibson had a Barney Kessel electric in 1961.
Höfner had several Beatle 459 models in 1966.

JM is certainly an odd duck. Openly speaking about his masturbation habits is enough all by itself right there to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that something's not right in the kitchen. And that's just the opening volley. There is so much one could point out.

He is strange. It is a fact. Period.

That being said, there is no denying the man can play a mean guitar and in any genre I would ever care to listen to, he shines equally well. Great writing too. The music biz is replete with bat-shit crazy, mad men geniuses. I'm not sure why this one guy gets singled out for ridicule the way he does when there are others even crazier.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
