My girlfriend belongs to an email list called freecycle and tonight she yells up to me at about 9:45 that someone put guitars and an amp by the curb about 2 towns over (no other info). So I figured screw it, let's take a ride, hoping for a one in a million find. Anyway, I get there and there is already a guy going through stuff. I walk right up and grab an amp with a cover on it and a black les paul style guitar. The amp is a Carlsbro Cobra 90 lead combo, and the git is a Memphis black les paul (might make a good decoration) -

I know the guitar is a low end bolt on neck model, but I have no idea about the amp. I plugged it in and it has power, but I didn't try to hook up a guitar to it. The amp is pretty dirty, but not too bad due to the cover. I'll post a couple of pics tomorrow for laughs. It looks like there is a good discussion forum for the amp company, so I'll give it a good once over tomorrow to try and figure what it is. It is solid state and weighs a ton. It's a combo with a 12" speaker, but I may make a custom box just for the head.

It would have been more fun if I found a vox or a marshall and a 60s strat, but what the hell at least I had the anticipation on the way over.

Maybe if it has decent pickups in it--it might sound good.

How's it sound unplugged?

If you clean it up with new strings and get a decent sound--it might be worth it--it might not--but hey--it was free.

Carlsbro were a fantastic amp maker, just up the road from me. (I always seem to end up living 20 miles away from amp factories). Now sadly gone bust, a victim of the economic crisis. Our bassist had some involvement in the liquidation. Theres some rumour of the honcho's coming under investigation for driving the company bust by paying for parts with produce and starting up again under a different name.

Suppose I'll have to move again, if they dont reopen.

It works, but I think the pots could use some cleaning up. I'll need to open it up and give it the once-over. I may convert it from a combo to just a head. Not bad for a freebie though.
