I took the plunge today with changing the guage of strings. I am going from 9-40 to 10-46. I am still using Fender Nickel Wound Bullets. I hope the sound is a little different (more full).

I won't get my guitar back until Monday night. I went ahead and had it professionally set up as well. I just do not like messing with truss rods (I really messed up a guitar long ago messing with one). I will do anything to a guitar, except mess with the truss rod.

If I like them, I will throw them on my CV as well.

I think you will be happy with 10's....I use that gauge on my Gits(Fender Bullets) and to me the have an easier feel. I (try) to play blues, and find they are well suited to do so. I havent broken any yet! lol

I was looking for a more solid feel. I have not broken a string in a very long time while bending (using 9-40's), but there are times I thought I was going to.

Hi rkreisher, when I bought my Strat in 2007 (first electric guitar), I had so much problems staying in tune that I changed the strings from .009 to .010. I loved the feel and soon after that I changed again but to .011 this time, and I played like that for more than a year. I was also planning to change to .012 but the lesson was learned while I played with the .011. Last week I changed back to .010 and I am pretty sure that I will continue to play like that for a long while. Maybe that in more than thirty years of car repairs, my hands were abused by the work, and sometimes I feel that I should take more care of them. See ya. :)

rkreisher,
I'm still toying with putting flat wound 11s on my Nashville Deluxe, I'm using them on a Gretsch 5120 and the touch and lack of finger noise has me wondering. Currently the Tele is strung with Silver Bullet 10s and they work just fine.
Happy tinkering

So I put my guitar in the shop to be professionally set-up/intonated along with the change in string guage. A week later I finally get it back. I have to admit that I was really pissed off that it took a week when the guy told me it would only take a few days.

So I got it back today, and I have to say it was worth waiting a week. The set-up/intonation is excellant. I love the new guage strings on it too (11-48's) When I take my Squier in to do the same, I will not be so antsy about waiting for the finished product because I know that it will come back in excellant condition. The best $40 bucks I have spent in a long time.

If you ever take your guitar somewhere for a set up--hopefully the person doing the work WATCHES you play to see what you play like--the best set up I had someone else do was like that--he watched me for a couple of minutes, and it helped a lot.

I've had other guys lower my action despite me saying I don't like real low action--sure enough what do they do--lower it so the strings are barely above the frets.

I had one guy add relief when I said I liked the action higher--he didn't put the bridge back where it was--or even raise it a bot.

The neck had too much relief after he was through--so I went out & got Dan Erlewine's book- Guitar Player Repair Guide 3rd Edition, and checked other books at the library & online, and experimented on an old guitar--and removed the relief and raised the action--and it plays better.

It's much better if you can do the setup yourself. Too many guys set it up either the way they like it, or how they think most people like it--not how YOU like it.

The guy who did that gave me a great setup--unfortunately I have no idea where he is today.

Oh, and there was the set up on my Mustang when I bought it as well. I haven't needed a new set up on it--the neck has remained the way I like it, and intonation has only needed slight adjustment a couple of times.

It may need more soon, as there is some noticeable fret wear--nothing major--but it could make a difference.
