Well, I just got me a new Sennheiser e609 today from GC, got it for $92.00 :) Brand new.

So I made a little mic shootout 3 video to compare it with a Shure SM57. Please comment on what you think and which one you like better. I used a Boss RC-2 looper so that both microphones will be subjected to the same playing dynamics to accurately compare their tone characteristics.

Another youtube video I made showing how your tone can change by moving the mic around.

I really like the Sennheiser e609. It just sounds better to me. Thanks for the vid/shootout.

I like to listen first and not watch. By listening they sounded pretty much the same, but when watching and listening the 57 didn't sound as "open" as the 609.

FWIW, the frequency specs are very similiar on both but the pickup pattern is a little different, but not much.

I made a follow to the "mic shootout 3". This time with a little better video camera and using garageband for the audio recording this time. I think with this updated video, you can hear a clear difference between the SM57 and the e609. Check it out and post your comment please.

Nice info with that video. I'm still partial to the 57, sounded warmer to me. The other sounded a bit thin, trebly and lifeless to me, but I could also EQ that out.

Those SM57's are solid though. You can hammer a shed with those and still use them 20 yrs later. Not sure how many other mics are that well constructed and reliable. Because of that, my vote will always go to the 57.

The second video was recorded with garagband, perhaps I didn't use it properly. The first video was recorded directly with iMovie which sounds more like the amp tone. The second video sounds too processed, not natural sounding.
