TLDR version: As an experiment, scientists created violins using woods infected with fungi that is known to soften the wood but not cause outright rot. When stacked up against a stradivarius, the infected violins the infected were deemed to be warmer and in a survey most chose the infected violins as the best sounding.

I don't know about softer wood but when I looked at bowlfresheners post I started to hear 'Incense and Peppermints' by the Strawberry Alarm Clock in my head.
