Here is a link to an old Steely Dan video. Lots of cool old Fender gear in use.

Great and strange band. I remember when that aired though Denny Dias is playing the famous intro it was really session ace Elliot Randall who cut that in the studio in one take. After two years it was just Fagen and Becker and the most killer lineup of session guitarist you could ever find that made some great music. By the way for those who dont know a Steely Dan is a dildo.

That's not Denny: it's Baxter. Denny is playing the boogie riddim in the stupid purple pants.

There are a lot of "one take" legends surrounding various Steely D. performances, especially the soprano sax on "Aja," but I've read virtually everything on the Dan and this is the first time I've heard that claim for Randall's solo on "Reelin' In The Years."

Everybody by now certainly knows where the band got their name: from the seminal beatnik William Burroughs novel Naked Lunch. The Steely Dan MKIII is a steam-powered dildo from Yokohama described in a hallucinatory sex scene (of which there are dozens in the novel, which is culled from notebooks Burroughs kept during his life as a junkie). But do you know what happened to Steely Dan I and II?

When I started listening to Steely Dan, when they first came out, I thought there music would "change everything" ...kind of set a new bar for artistic effort. It took me a while to realize, there music didn't change anything, past the insiratiuon it gave a few musicians to try to reach a new level. Most players just can fly that high.

The song writing is the main thing; I guess once you have that basis you can try different players. Using the studio cats sure didn't hurt their legacy.
