Well let me just say in NY the cops are going to do whatever they want. Be it talk on the phone or flip on there siren so they dont have to wait for a red light. The quality of police officers has hit an all time low. First you can thank the Mayor for that as he just upped the starting pay for rookies from $28,000 to closer to 35. There salary was so low they were able to get food stamps when they started. So the most capable guys ran for jobs out of the city and your left with the crumbs. There have been a lot of cops pinched here for working with drug rings robbing banks and doing home invasions. Plus when a guy comes home and does not speak good english goes to get his wallet and gets 49 shots thrown his way that tells you something. Also it has to be national news because he was an inch from being head of homeland security ,the ex commissioner Bernard Kerik started his trial for turning in favors to have $200,000 worth of work done on his house, plus he made 6 million from stock options he exercised in the company that sold the department stun guns and is facing 20 years. They are sizing him up for a dress in Attica as we speak.lol Go Ahead Bite The Big Apple Dont Mind The Maggots.

The laws that police officers are paid to enforce pertain to everyone but the officers themselves in many places...When I lived in Nashville, it was not uncommon to see a cop turn on his lights at a red light so they wouldn't have to wait, only to turn them off once they crossed the intersection...

But they are not all bad for the most part straycat, you have to remember there are over 36,000 NYPD for over 8 million in the city. Thats a tough job and crime in NY is nothing compared to Baltimore were the population is 600,000 so they must be doing something right in NY.

cvilleira not that they are all bad for the most part they are not the best choices. My wife has 7 members of her family that are or were police officers including my brother inlaw who retired a liutenent. The mayor dropped the starting salary so low that a lot of guys coming out of the academy went and bolted for different parts of NY where the salary is double and there was a write up guys were going as far as Oregon .So I here this first hand. A lot of people on the force do not belong on it. About a year ago a guy who had mental problems was shot dead in a church parking lot by a female officer for swinging a metal folding chair. There were 3 other cops on the seen plus some security guards and they could not subdue him? The female cop shot him and was cleared as the chair was deamed a deadly weapon. Give me a break. I only say this because things like this have happened on a steady basis the last ten years as to many unqualified people are being put on the force and I blame it on how low the pay was. Until the hike who would want a job where you are putting your life on the line and dealing with problems all day long for $27,000 a year. The head of the PD union would be on TV weekly saying what a disgrace it is.

everyone dislikes the police until they need them. but i'll tell you, i definitely would NOT want their job under any circumstances. it's tough enough lviing whre i live and around the people i live around, last thing id want is to be the guy who would actually come into my neighborhood and try to detain or arrest one of these guys

so, i am going to overlook the cell phone thing. not tring to start an argument though. sure they get away with things they shouldn't. but we ALL do.
Who said anything about hating the police? The topic was simply addressing if "the Police were allowed to use cell phones while driving a motor vehicle". As I understand, the law applies to all, no one is exempt.

Since the Police are "law enforcers" they should be examples of upholding the law IMHO. If you practice what you preach, you will certainly get more respect and support..

i wasnt saying you hate the police, but in general many people have a bad perception of them, mainly because of the sentiment that they think they "are above the law".

Although I disagree aboutt he practice what you preach thing, as many portions of our society hate the cops simply because they are cops and it is part of their culture. No matter what the cops did they would still hate them.
