I'm curious if the Police or any Law Enforcements are immune to the currently law on Cell Phone ban use while driving a motor vehicle.

I ask this because while driving to work yesterday, I notice a police officer next to me on a cell phone while at a stop light. He had the cell phone next to his ear, no bluetooth or any hands free devices. It was obviously not a business call, as he was laughing and conversation about his golf playing over the weekend. Yes, he was speaking loud it enough for any motorist next to him to hear.

Police are allowed to do pretty much whatever they want. The rules don't seem to apply to them, only civilians.

Besides what can you do? Tell the badge with a gun that he's breaking the law? He can shoot you and get away with it, so I doubt talking on a cell phone is going to get him in any trouble.

Here is an interesting article:

http://www.connecttristates.com/news/news_story.aspx?id=326779

Quote:
An Illinois State trooper from southwestern Illinois faces criminal charges and a civil suit for an accident that killed two sisters almost 2 years ago.

New information about that accident shows the trooper allegedly was driving more than 100 mph, sending and getting e-mails and talking on his cell phone moments before his patrol car slammed into an oncoming car, then hit another vehicle.

Something similar to this happened here in Vegas a few months ago.
Two LVMPD cars were heading to a call when one of them hit a vehicle that turned left in front of him. The officer died. Our sheriff, in a local news interview, said that the driver of the car that was turning left was drunk and that both patrol cars were traveling with lights and sirens at the time of the accident. The officer in the second car said the same.
Witnesses at the scene however, reported that neither car had lights and sirens on and both were travelling at a very high rate of speed.
So, after the driver of the other car is vilified in the news, accused of drunk driving, has his picture flashed on every news report for about two weeks, the truth came out.
Both officers were running without lights, without sirens, and at speeds over 100 mph. The driver of the other car was not drunk according to blood tests, had no way of knowing how fast the oncoming cars were really going when he turned left, and in fact tried everything he could do to pull the injured officer from his burning car.
Yet, after all of this came out, the officer was given a hero's funeral, and charitable funds were set up for his family but poor mister civilian didn't even get so much as an apology. One quick blurb on the news that charges were dropped against him. Thats it! And on top of that, the officer in the second car that lied and said both cars were running lights and sirens was not even disciplined in any way other than being sent to a class on proper vehicle response procedures.
Is there a double standard? You better believe it.

everyone dislikes the police until they need them. but i'll tell you, i definitely would NOT want their job under any circumstances. it's tough enough lviing whre i live and around the people i live around, last thing id want is to be the guy who would actually come into my neighborhood and try to detain or arrest one of these guys

so, i am going to overlook the cell phone thing. not tring to start an argument though. sure they get away with things they shouldn't. but we ALL do.

I work with the police every day and this topic has come up. Police are to obey the same laws as the people they serve and protect - this includes holding and talking on a cellphone while driving. Like everyone else, if this is a NON-EMERGENCY call, they are supposed to pull over and then talk. But.......because the police are people too..... there are some who obey the law and others who don't.

Police cars here all have laptops and are set up for the driver to use. Also when sirens and lights are turned on many start automatic recording. Then you have the fact that in many areas witnesses would say the Police did not have there lights on even when they did because they don't like them. The city of Baltimore pays out millions in lawsuits just because they fear going to court with Police involved things. Finding a jury to side with Police on some matters not worth the risk.

sounds like where i live. i mean i think the polcie go too far sometimes also, but they have a job that id never want to do and yet they do it every day. i give them nothing but respect because i've never had one take advantage of me, of course i tend to fly pretty straight and the times i did get in trouble it was my fault.

And something else cops do-run red lights and use the excuse I had a call and I didn't want to alarm the perps I was after. Yes cops DO think they're above the law.

We had an incident a few years back where the sheriff of the county i live in got t-boned at an intersection and right off the bat the other driver got accused of running a red light. A few days later the coroner said the sheriff had a fatal heart attack pre-wreck. I'm surprised the cops still didn't make it look like the civilian driver was still at fault.

Back in October 1988 I was pulled over by a city cop in the town I live in. Wouldn't tell me for about thirty minutes what he stopped me for and on top of this three other cops came by to see what was going on. Then they started grilling me! The only way I found out why I was stopped a cop I know-he was at my wedding-walked up to me to see what was going on. I told him how long I had been there and still didn't know so he goes to the officer to ask why he stopped me. My buddy came back and told me you're not going to find this funny now but you'll laugh about it later. I was accused of trying to rape a 16 year-old black girl at a local high school by a 17 year-old white male. I was born in January 1959. I promptly walked up to the officer that stopped me and told him you need to learn math.I was born in 1959 not 1972. When my cop buddy told him who I married-a sister to a cop that works in the SAME town with the cop that stopped me and my cop buddy was at our wedding-they still wouldn't let me go. The girl I supposedly raped had a ride-by to look at me for identification. Luckily for me she told them it wasn't me. I would have looked like a mile of bad road by the time I was booked and locked up. Did I get an apology? HELL NO! I would haved sued but what good would it have done. Cops are NEVER in the wrong.

Who said anything about hating the police? The topic was simply addressing if "the Police were allowed to use cell phones while driving a motor vehicle". As I understand, the law applies to all, no one is exempt.

Since the Police are "law enforcers" they should be examples of upholding the law IMHO. If you practice what you preach, you will certainly get more respect and support..

This is true, but imo the problem isn't just the police who are bad apples. It's the other 'good' apples that lie, cover up, and protect the bad ones. That makes them just as bad.

Look at the articles posted above. It's not just the cop that did wrong, there's always another cop lying to protect him. That's 100% total bullsh*t.

The citizens get treated like sh*t by the police, then they wonder why no one likes or trusts them anymore.
