[quote="Troublecall"]I just found out that my oldest daughter was killed by a drunk driver last night. Her husband is in critical condition.

I am so terribly sorry for your loss.

What continues to infuriate me are the spineless legislators who fail to characterize DUI as the criminal act it truly is and give the penalty for vehicular homicide some teeth.

Do feel free to look to us for the shoulder you may seek.

Doc :(

my god man that's terrible. Drunk drivers are scum.

I don't even know you and I feel bad for your situation, no one should ever have to go through this because of the selfish thoughtless actions of a drunk.

My friends,
Words cannot express my gratitude at the outpouring of support. Thank you very much.

I finally got more info. My daughter Errin had just received word that she had passed her nursing boards, so they went out to dinner on their motorcycle. On the return trip, they had moved into the turn lane and slowed for a left turn into their subdivision. This drunk butt nugget swerved into the center lane and hit them at 70 mph. Errin was killed instantly - her husband Gerry spent 15 hours in the ER waiting for an ICU room and finally got moved into ICU yesterday. HE has lost a kidney and numerous broken bones, but is stable.
My 11 year old grandson Seth is in shock.

This was the guys second DUI arrest. If there is any consolation at all in the event, he is in custody in the Bandera (TX) County jail charged with vehicular manslaughter. SInce my son-in-law is a sergeant in the Bandera Sherrif's office, I am certain that he is not enjoying his stay.
And none of the bondsmen in Bandera COunty will touch him - so he is staying in jail.

Again, thank you all. I had to keep the old stiff uppper lip at the wedding, I did not want to ruin the young lady's day. But I had to express my grief somehow. So thank you all for the outlet.

Wow... I cried after reading your post. I know the emotions you are having! In 1978 my girl friend died in a head on collision with a drunk driver! In 2005, my daughter (only 19) also died in a auto wreck because of a drunk! Not to preach, but time does heal! My prayers are with you!

As noted herein, your story is repeated day in and day out across the length and breadth of this nation. No need to reiterate those having recently occurred in the NY Metro area alone, the adjudication of which have set some precedents, and bear repetition in legal venues elsewhere.
However, even a 'three strikes and you're out' law would have been to no avail in your situation.

My view is:

-zero tolerance legislation with respect to the introduction, by any means, or through any portal of entry, of any agent potentially incapacitating to the human organism;
-one DUI: forbidden to operate any motor vehicle in that.or any other jurisdiction within in the Western Hemisphere for life, monitored through a DUI registry.
-an injury arising out of a DUI: imprisonment of duration tied to severity, - -a death: life imprisonment w/o elegiblity for parole.

From where I sit, if you create a zero tolerance law, you eliminate the question of intent because what else would a driver be doing if after having stopped to knowingly ingest an intoxicant and then returning to the vehicle but intend to operate same after having done so.

Perhaps THAT, will give people pause when they knowingly drive into an establishment and 'belly up' to the bar.

It plays havoc with our social/recreational culture, and a lot of what we do herein often takes place in the kind of venues I describe, but it is time we set all of this against the waste of innocents we suffer, take a stand in their behalf, and bear witness to their useless sacrifice.

Doc
