Did he ever play Fenders? I don't recall ever seeing him with one. I think he used mostly Les Pauls until he hooked up with PRS. Or am I wrong?

He was a big Yamaha guy there in the mid '70s. His singer, Alex Ligertwood, frequently played a Lake Placid Blue Strat in the '80s.

Here is a 1980 Yamaha brochure with Santana's endorsement and pic for this model:

I've been a fan of Carlos since the beginning and have been playing his stuff for a long long time. In my opinion, his best playing and tone were on the first Santana album where he used an SG Special. And to go back even further, look for 17 year old Carlos playing the blues on the Live Adventures of Al Kooper and Mike Bloomfield album.

No you don't need a PRS to sound like Carlos. It's all about touch and feel and using the right licks. I've always played his stuff on Fenders. I believe he did use a Strat on the song "Winning". Truthfully, the PRS is my least favorite of his guitars. His SG Special sound is my favorite, followed by the Yamaha he used on Europa.

Man, I hate that song. To me, the release of "Zebop" was when he started to lose me as a fan. Just one opinion ...

I borrowed Zebop from a friend and he was telling me how great of an album it was, I agree with yuo i was really disappointed. Other than "I Love You Too Much" the rest of the album is a miss.

I never had the Zebop album but "Winning" is definitely not my cup of tea. A very un-Santana song.
