I've always liked Santana, he's one of my favorites. You might want to check out Los Lonely Boys too if you haven't already. They're also in the latin/rock/blues ballpark.

I have to confess, I've never really paid close attention to this guy. I was wandering around town yesterday, and picked up two CD's of his, Shaman and Supernatural. I have to say, I love his stuff :D

I know how to play one or two of his songs but I still can't play his songs. I guess it's the way he holds the notes and how he puts himself in it. I can't connect with that.

When they talk about guys that all you have to hear is one note and you know who it is he is without a doubt one of those guys. Check out cuts like Samba pa ti and Europa for instrumentals that will give you goose bumps and have you busy for weeks learning them.

Agreed! Abraxas was my intro to Santana. I bought it when it was new and I was young. I remember struggling to play Black Magic Woman.

Probably my favorite guitar tone. I can play his style pretty well, but usually play like "me". His tone is something I use most of the time though. My strat into a Mesa Boogie is the most amazing tone to me. That thick tone, perfect gain and sustain can't be beat.

You know me so well bro  that's exactly what turned me on to Carlos 8) as for the fun part...... I stuck both cd's on my iPod, plugged said iPod into my spider jam. My spider senses told me to go to Zappa Solo tone  programmed a few tracks (one being the chessey Game Of Love) and tried to play along. Man I had a blast! I'm gonna do it all again today, thanks for all the replies folks. Oh yeah..... and thanks Carlos, you're the man 8)

Yeah just check out the drummer at woodsock. I wanna say his drummer was Michael Shrieve then. But man he was probably 20 years old and stoned out of his mind. I thought he would fall off the drum stool at any time!

I've always been into Santana, ever since I started playing in the early seventies, I love jamming to that latin rock beat!
When I first heard Los Lonely Boys, I knew I had to check them out!
They played im my area two years ago, went to see them and they blew me away!
VERY talented musicians! Three Brothers making music and having fun!

Check out this video with "Carlos" jamming with them. 8)

He plays alot of things in a harmonic minor scale usually A. I am a big fan and learned many of my licks from practicing his songs. His phrasing and melodic interpretation are what make him a unique player. Enjoy that PRS, but if you throw a bucker into the bridge of one of your Teles you can get that sustain with the right amp.

I fool around with his stuff occasionally, it's not all that hard, it's his expression that makes it a really great sound. And you don't need the PRS to get the sound or even a humbucker. He used to have instructional videos on his website and for several of them he used his "practice setup": a Strat through a Cybertwin. Also, when they introduced the new Santana MD there was an interview at NAAM where he talked about how hard they worked to get the guitar to "sound like a strat"
