I have to confess, I've never really paid close attention to this guy. I was wandering around town yesterday, and picked up two CD's of his, Shaman and Supernatural. I have to say, I love his stuff :D

One of the best sustain style players out there.

Happy Listening,

Snowy,

I was in the same boat as you, never listened to Carlos much. I have found that his music and Latin music in general is very appealing to me. It is fun to play along with also. I really like Los Lobos also............

Hi Snowy: I too came very late to Santana. He's not the only fine player who's big hats have mistakenly put me off investigating further...

He truly is one of the all time greats, isn't he? And a very decent sounding fella into the bargain it seems.

Cheers - C

If you haven't heard them before check out Mana'. They are a very good Latino Rock group and their guitarist is one bad azz dude. Sergio Vallin. I think you'll be impressed.

But I always felt Santana was vastly underrated. He always had such a sharp style too to not too many outside of Jimi have been able to match.

I can't disagree with any of your comments guys, I've listened to both albums this afternoon. I'm nipping out now to see if I can pick up some more of his stuff, his playing gave me goosebumps  As for playing along, I'll need another decade or three to practise

I've liked his playing ever since I heard his solo on "Black Magic Woman".

I'd put him in my top ten favorite guitarists.

If you are willing to dig a little more, check out "Inner Secrets" and "Marathon". These albums were released back to back in the late '70s. It was when Santana had really fine tuned his tone and his band, and his music showed significant growth from his earlier stuff. In my opinion, they are his best efforts. Personally, I give Santana endless credit for what he did with latin rhythms, and creating an impressive musical legacy ... but ... I honestly find his guitar playing a bit over rated.

Snowy if you dig those you have to get Abraxis not only Santanas best but one of the best albums ever. Carlos is and has always been one of my idols and has a style that is truly his own. When they talk about guys that all you have to hear is one note and you know who it is he is without a doubt one of those guys. Check out cuts like Samba pa ti and Europa for instrumentals that will give you goose bumps and have you busy for weeks learning them.
