Hey guys, haven't been 'round in a while.

My dad's buying a new desktop fairly soon, as ours is crapping out. It has served us well for several years, but it's time we got something new.

He wanted to get a PC and then install Windows XP on it (we have the installation CD, and Vista sucks). However, I believe pretty soon we might get a virus or some sort of malware that could corrupt the hardrive once again. I was pondering a Mac.

I went on the Apple site, read reviews, and actually have first hand experience with one (my brother has one). I was thinking about convincing my dad to get a Mac mini. Everything about it is so attractive. The thought of having a little worry about crashes is satisfying at its least, and the way it works seems so appealing than the random file-sorting of Windows. I might actually like something with GarageBand...

...of course I need a microphone first...

If in the end we don't get a mac, how's Linux?

I can't vouch specifically for the Mac Mini, but I am the very satisfied owner of both an iMac desktop computer and a MacBook Pro notebook. And GarageBand kicks arse! 8)

Once you get aquatinted with the Mac environment, you will wonder why you didn't switch sooner.

Congrats on your new Mac. I have a Mac Mini at home, my wife uses it mostly and its great. I manily use my Macbook Pro Laptop. Very tiny and yet very powerful. Virtually quite as well, no fans on this baby unlike all PC computers. Will your new mac come with the latest Snow Leopard OS?

I have a PC also, but mainly use it for gaming. I built it just for gaming and running two evga 260 gtx in SLI playing mostly Team Fortress 2.

Hendrixfan99,

Wondows 7 comes out in a few weeks, if you can hold on why not give that a look ? I stayed with XP and so far a secure router and a second firewall seem to be getting the job done. I've just got too much invested in software and files to start fresh.

Keep us posted,
John.E

I've always used Macs at home (well... for the past ten years, at any rate) and probably always will. Initially they're more expensive, but in all that time I've never lost a moment or a file to a virus or had to spend any money on hardware maintenance. I've always used PCs at work — they're necessary for what I do — and they're fine right up until the moment when they're suddenly not. I've never been one to engage in Mac versus PC debates, but I hate losing time to computer failures and (touch wood) have yet to encounter one with a Mac. It'll happen, but hey, ten years with no problem is a decent track record so far.
