Just want to alert you that my academic community will undergo MANDATORY vaccination against H1N1 beginning next week and that current CDC advisories recommended receiving both it and seasonal vaccine, though not necessarily simultanously. Priorities have been issued for those groups at most serious risk if infected and all physicians have this information at their disposal.

Discuss with your family health care provider the pros and cons of your being protected. I understand that there may be a broad range of opinion in this matter and do I want to stimulate an extensive debate herein.

I have not personally availed myself of influenza immunization in the past, and have been rather fortunate to not have fallen ill in a long time, though I WAS hit twice in the late 60's anda remember it well. :?

My experiences in public places and around people during the recent H1N1
event has convinced me that I best protect myself from becoming ill and a possible vector to others.

People just don't know when it is in theirs and/or the best interests of others to stay home when they are ill.

Doc

My Doc's office dosn't even have the regular shots yet said they will next week though. We were given them each year at work when I was with JHU and family that still works there said they will be getting on the next couple weeks. I have not decided on the second shot though.

I have already recieved the regular Flu vaccine earlier this month. I work in the health field and have already been exposed to Swine Flu several times this year, and I still have not gotten terribly sick (yet).

I am going to hold off on the Swine Flu vaccine. I have read the possible side effects and decided the vaccine is just not worth the risks.

That's always been the issue for me, but this time the matter is out of my hands. I'm not yet ready to leave that organization.

I'll be getting the flu shot in a couple of weeks. When I was at the hospital last week I noticed the signs "Please cover your mouth when you cough" and "Wash your hands thoroughly" posted all over the place.

I'll take my chances. The only thing flu shots have done for me in the past was to make me good and sick. YMMV.

I'll find out. I just got my first flu shot in my entire 53 year life span. Seems like every time I get the flu as I get older, it gets worse and harder to recover.

Martian, I used to have the same problem. Then somebody turned me on to the idea of taking several aspirin and a big dose of vitamin C just before getting the shot. I've followed this advice for years, and I haven't gotten sick once. As you say, YMMV. 8)

I never had a choice. The Navy always mandated it. Never had ill effects personally. But no one would ever answer my question - if the flu shot has no side effects to worry about, why do you ground all the pilots for 24 hours afterward?

Now I go to the VA for an appointment and they stick me. Oh well...

There are 2 types of reactions that you can get with any medicines...An immediate reacton (AKA anaphylacis) or a delayed reaction (up to 24 hours for some medications and not as severe initially). The Flu vaccine is not different. That last thing Uncle Sam wants to do is have one of our people in the cockpit and have one of these reactions. That would be a waste of millions of dollars and possibly end up someone dying.

Thanks - but you kind of missed my point (which was rather smart-assed as is usual for me). No matter what objection anyone raised, the answer was always "You won't get sick. There are no side effects". Then they grounded the pilots. Kind of talking out both sides of their mouths, you know...

Myself and My Son are going to get the H1N1 shot in an hour but it seems late in the year for it now, not hearing much about it but I figure its best any to get anyway.
