Some people, even on these boards, will tell you they dont see what all the fuss about SRV is about....that they havent seen anything from SRV that impresses them.

Ask them how well they can play Scuttle Buttn.

What if you are, like me, more interested in music than gymnastics?

My reaction that kind of trained-seal playing is to say, "Wow... even though that music is not interesting or moving in any way, I'll bet it's kind of hard to play."

The main lick is just a pattern... play any pattern long enough, and you can do it. I watch that video and think,"Well, I've never tried, but I suppose I could get it down in a couple weeks or so." But I have no interest in doing that. Muscle memory isn't music.

I don't want to derail this thread, so I'll just say this:

SRV doesn't impress me musically, so I've never appreciated him. I've owned three of his CD's and gave them all away to my brother. who thinks he's God's other son. :D

In fact, I am not impressed with any guitar virtuoso who doesn't make emotionally and intellectually satisfying music. I'll take Bill Frisell over Jimi Hendrix (absolutely not a fan), Larry Carlton over Al DiMeola, Jim Campilongo over Brad Paisley. I like David Gilmour because he plays melodies, and don't like most other rock guitar heroes because they play licks. And I think one good songwriter is worth 100 "great" guitar players.

I really like this quote from Jerry Garcia: "For me, I think the only danger is being too much in love with guitar playing. The MUSIC is the most important thing, and the guitar is only the instrument."

"Scuttle Buttin'," was obviously composed as a show opener, a dazzling display of fireworks designed to floor an audience . It says, simply, "dig this!" It just doesn't reach me as music.

But if you hear it, then it's good for you. And I'm not disrespecting anyone who does. I'm just responding to your post. If somebody says they're not impressed with SRV, asking them if they can play this isn't a retort. No, I can't play it today. Yes, I could play it if I wanted to. but... I don't. Which is MY choice. Your retort carries the connotation that everybody should WANT to play this flashy lick, and if they can't their disdain for SRV can be dismissed as something like jealousy. But it can't.

ha ha ha ha, this Forum is about Fender guitars and then music, some of us think of American rock and roll as music so we gravitate towards those guitarists that exhibit the rock and roll way of life personified in a lyric written by my singer Rob for the song Gasoline; "we've only got tonight to feel alright, are you ready?", that's a yes or no answer, for the record SRV and JH and a precious few others were born ready, all of the rest would have to check a stat or read a book to be sure and by then it's no longer tonight, it's tomorrow, then their true colors are revealed, little girls with red hair no eyes and a little dog singing the most annoying song ever written.

been a little under the weather lately, did not really intend to drag it down to my level.

I have the main riff of Scuttle Buttin' almost up to speed. I've been working on it since last winter. Now I need to start working on the rest of the song. That's probably going to take another six months.

I can think of a lot of reasons why not to like SRV, but "I am not impressed with any guitar virtuoso who doesn't make emotionally and intellectually satisfying music" was definately not one of them.

Particularly the "emotionally" part. SRV's "Little Wing" is the only song that's actually made me cry the first time I heard it. That's a little embarrassing to admit... But it's still hard to listen to.

But music is so subjective that one person's opinion is really just as valid as anyone else.
