How often should the finger board be cleaned? I have heard many different things. Some people have said that if you clean it more than once a year, you will eventually destroy it.

I clean mine at least 3 times a year. It depends on how much I play that guitar and how dirty the fretboard looks or feels to me.

For me it's every time I change strings. My '67 Firebird III has had thousands of cleanings and is still in immaculate condition. All of my other gutars have seen hundreds of cleanings - same effect. I guess unless you soak them overnight you won't hurt a thing. Your sweat is a heavy combination of water and salt, not good for wood.

I wash my hands before I play so the neck stays preetty clean. I use my black Pecision only at gigs so it's only used about 20 hours a month or so. I clean the guitar after every gig and I wipe down the fret board. I play with a little bit of WD-40 on my fingers, the four on my left and the two on my right. When I wipe it down it gets cleaned a little. About twice a year I look into the pores of the fretboard, if they are filling up or if the wood looks like it's drying out then I clean it good with lemon oil. The red Precision I use every day. It stands in a guitar holder, never goes in a case. This guitar I clean the neck a couple of times a year. I don't use WD-40 when I'm playing this instrument so it gets dirty. Also, sitting in the music room uncovered 365 days a year adds dirt.

Rosewood fretboards: twice a year (the whole nine yards).
Maple fretboards don't really need deep cleaning as long as you wipe them off when you change strings.

I clean my Rosewood neck with Fender guitar polish every time that I change the strings. ive been told not to use polish on untreated Maple though so i just give that a wipe down with a cloth when I change the strings.

I clean mine with a dry cloth at the end of every session,
I see no real damage on the fretboard when doing so All I see are clean components a worn out neck finish and no rusty strings :p

There's a difference cleaning maple or rosewood fingerboards.

I suppose I just clean mine everyday (it's rosewood)
And I think it's more then necessary!
seeing as I had an unfortunate hand injury that makes me sweat like crazy.
