... you plug some cabinets directly to your pedalboard, like a couple of cabinets to a gnx2 or a bad monkey, does it work the same if you plug it into a combo?

You would need the power amp to generate the signal. You could run the Bad Monkey's line out to an amp and run a cable from the second output to another amp or mixer though.

No, a mixer doesn't generate any amplification power, either.... you'd still need a power amp of some kind to drive the speakers.
