So, as usually on Saturdays, i went to my local shop for lessons, and spent the majority of the next two hours playing teles. I said before that I don't particularly like the tone too much, and the not contoured slab of wood wasn't too big of a deal. Well, I played with some heavy overdrive, and that baby could sing. How could I have been so deaf? The punch, warmth, and sustain that are unmistakable trademarks of a tele. I nearly forgot about all that when I picked up a strat. :) But I found the strat too bright (it was a classic vibe '60s, whose pickups are a little too bright for my tastes), and I played through a Tribute by G&L ASAT Classic, and the Squier Standard special with chrome pick guard and black headstock. I liked the sound of the Tribute a bit more, but the maple fretboard seems a little bit 'sticky' and the Squier Standard felt really nice. Says it has AlNiCo V pickups, too. I honestly am re-thinking about my next guitar.

So far, the closest thing from Fender-like instruments that I've heard that sounds like a humbucker (besides a humbucker, of course). Just listen to that sustain on the bridge pickup through a Super Champ on setting 8 with the gain on 6...

Cleaned up real nicely, too.

Fhopkins... wild rose just answered.

And I expected for you to say something like 'be careful they'll grow on you.' :)

But I really look forward to playing another tele.

I want a traditional Tele. Right now, the only one I own is the J5 Triple Tele Deluxe I traded a Jagstang for.

Now all you need is either a great custom tailor or a skilled plastic surgeon.

OK before I talk tele-MARTIAN have you seen the post that says Ceri you had us a little worried there bro as we thought maybe the mothership picked you up lol. Good to see your name and go over to the Ceri post and tell everyone you are OK. Now we just have to hear from Ceri and all will be back to normal. Now Tele talk. My first Fender and top grade guitar. To me nothing is more comfortable to play on the planet then a tele. Not as versatile as a Strat but to be honest with swapped out pups-Dimarzio Fast Tracks I can get that AC/DC to ZEP sound my favorite ax.

Tnanks for missing me!

That Esquire was my first Fender. I was pretty much satisfied with it until I played a, "brand new" 1967 Strat. After finally getting my first Strat (that pink one), I could never go back to the Esquire or even a Tele for that matter. It's something though, once a player settles in on either a Tele or a Strat, although the other model remains highly respected by him or her, it simply doesn't measure up to them any more.

Would you please direct me to Ceri's post? I can't seem to find it.

Martian, I never said the tele was my favorite. My strat will always be my baby. And so will all the others I will have. I just have more respect for the tele, and more desire to play it. You can't get a strat-y sound with a tele, and vice versa. It is just that I like the sound of a tele bridge pickup through an overdriven amp more than the strat's. But the neck/middle position on the strat is hat sets it apart, for me.
