Somehow, I figured that Ceri's absence would eventually involve wood and tools. I too am looking forward to the build thread.
Ceri, are you in the mood to build a wooden head cabinet for my Diana? She's a Trainwreck Rocket clone built by Paul Ruby...perhaps some nice flamed maple or curly cherry? I've been looking for wood online, but some of these exotic lumber suppliers are slow to respond.

To those suggesting finish colors - good thoughts! I also have ultramarine on the list... :D

Hi mclmk8d: have you tried these folks? Very highly spoken of, it seems:

http://www.gilmerwood.com/instrument_wood-maples.htm

If I lived on your continent I'd be one of their customers for sure. Some of the burl wood makes my heart skip a beat. But then some of the prices make it skip two beats...

I'd love to see the outcome of that particular project. Good luck!

...That street sign is still on that building... I'm thinking they "cut" it out of that picture to use in the album cover's photo (which has a lot of other doctoring: the posters of what the boys looked like circa 1970, for instance)...

Ah well, that was when "cut and paste" really meant cut and paste!

A second idea could include making a similar guitar from fresh water soaked wood. The tonal distinctions must be incredible, dont you think? :P

By coincidence I've been thinking about burying some of my own felled ash in mud at the bottom of a barrel of water for a few months to see if I can imitate the properties of this reclaimed submerged timber people make such a fuss about. That's another possible project, isn't it?

In fact, I've done quite a bit of sailing on the Great Lakes in the U.S. Upper Midwest and Canada. Not quite oceanic but pretty close. Long sailing is a unique lifestyle. That's for sure. It could be the most relaxing lifestyle available, if you can afford it.

On which, just got a copy of this photo, taken from the other boat that was with us for the first day. My friend is disappointed with this picture because we're at the bottom of a wave so the bow isn't showing proudly enough, and also we're not carrying much sail compared to what's possible (apparently). But to my ignorant land lubber eyes this is a cute picture so I'm going to show it off!

Pretty, huh?

I expect you to start eating spinach straight out of the can...gotta be a sailorman. Beautiful sloop (BigJay, is that what it is?). It looks like a great place to mellow out.
I emailed the wood place for prices.

A beautiful sloop. I love that hull design and there appears quite a bit of headroom below for a 40-50 footer. Very stable and conducive to land legs! Very "classic" vessel. Not a racer, but comfortable for traveling. Nice.

Hey, good eye! I asked, and was told that she is indeed 40 foot at the waterline, 50 foot on deck (which must include the bowsprit, presumably?).

Apparently, the difference between the two measurements is vital information to sailors - a comfortable ride over waves, or some such (??).

Wow, cool: you're going for it! Have you seen the flamed timber they used on the first 100 Kirk Hammett sig Randall amps? Nuts, but neat...

Cheers - C
