Ha! So it is indeed the one in North London, huh? I couldn't see the sign well enough in the little album cover photos I found online.

By the way, Orville: I don't know "whatever happened to Slade", but Noddy Holder has been making a modest but very respectable career on TV and radio in my part of the world for the last few years. Amongst other things he turns out to be a much better actor than many other rockers who've tried it.

But the most celebrated thing he's done recently was to voice the floor announcements in the elevators in Walsall New Art Gallery; an achievement of which any of us would be justly proud.

So that's whatever happened to one part of Slade...

Cheers - C

Thanks, gents. Seen it from a distance, and that was quite enough for me!

I don't like my sea too lumpy, if that's OK...

Slade were Great! I took your suggestion and used Google Street View to "virtually wander" down Rock Street. I couldn't see a building that looked anything like that in the photo. Maybe the building is long gone, or there's another segment of Rock Street that I missed, or that original photo was doctored to make it appear that it was taken on Rock Street (a really cool name, no?).

I'm wondering if the building in the photo was some kind of theatre as those "frames" would be perfect for posters of upcoming attractions.

Ceri, I insist you build a guitar from that wood.

Not making fun of me, Ceri, are you?

Absolutely not making fun of you, no! And I also insist I build a guitar from that timber. It shall be done! (I've been measuring up more carefully today and indeed it will be possible to get a two-piece body and a neck from that one plank of iroko. That idea appeals, I think?)

'Part from anything else, my boat builder friend has a workshop full of nice tools which I'm keen to demo. We sat for hours discussing timber and carpentry: he described to me a traditional way of building a wooden boat, such as the beautiful little dingy we were carrying which he'd made - and it turns out you can make a boat in almost exactly the same way a Renaissance lute is constructed.

...Like this:

http://www.vanedwards.co.uk/renlute.htm

The lute moulds in the picture on this page are very similar to those used to build small boats:

http://www.vanedwards.co.uk/four.htm#con

So wadayaknow? A few days' sailing and a whole new world of instrument possibilities opens up...

It's all good clean fun, huh?

Cheers - C

Rats: now I'm curious.

My wife's new-ish assistant has just bought a house in that area. We had dinner there the other night and it seems likely I might be dragged back to build some fitted book cases. ( ) If so, I'll take the opportunity to go look at Rock Street and tell you what I find.

BTW: I'm honored by your spelling of theatre/theater, Orville... :)

Cheers - C

You mean "honoured"? I'm honored now!

I think I partially solved it. I have the CD reissue (2007). Inside there are more pictures from the photo shoot that lead to the cover ... at least that's what I assume because they are wearing the same clothes. They are pictured outside some townhouses at 6 and 8 Rock Street. I can find that building on Google Street View! (at the corner of Prah Rd and Rock Street). That street sign is still on that building (you have to go down Prah to see it)! I'm thinking they "cut" it out of that picture to use in the album cover's photo (which has a lot of other doctoring: the posters of what the boys looked like circa 1970, for instance).

No telling where that cover building is! Maybe somewhere nearby, but I didn't find it wandering around that part of London in Street View. Too much fun.
