After watching the 3-part documentary on the Beatles Anthology, I realized that bandmate's personalities or chemistry is what really keeps a band together more than any other thing.

For example, the longest together rock band (ZZ Top, I think?) have weathered many years without a personnel change.

The Stones and The Who have replaced members, but the core of these bands has been through the ringer (so to speak).

I guess The Kinks were together a long time too.

What other bands have been around or stayed together without personnel changes, for long periods?

Don't forget about the Grateful Dead. The only time they ever replaced anyone was when someone died. But of course, that rule didn't apply to Jerry Garcia who was irreplacable. He died, then the band died along with him.

There is Aerosmith also. I don't think they ever replaced anyone, not sure about that though.

Aerosmith started out with Joe Perry and another/different guitarist and a Sax player. I have an old bootleg from '72....glad they made the changes!

What about the Moody Blues, any others?

ACDC has had a couple personnel changes. Singer(twice,) drummer, and I believe bass player.

but they have had a stable line up for a long time.

Yup, since 1975 the only change to the lineup was getting Brian Johnson after the death of Bon Scott. Before 1975, Dave Evans was the singer, Rob Bailey on bass and Peter Clark on drums. Bailey and Clark departed at the beginning of 1975 right before High Voltage was put out, and Evans was kicked out after getting into a fight with the Malcolm brothers >_>

pink Floyd has had lineup changes.

david gilmour was brought in as a safety net for when Sid Barrett was unreliable. They eventually used DG as a full time replacement. To start with David used to hide behind the amps and play sid's parts. Sid would be unhooked from the soundboard, and oblivious.

Rush's lineup has been the same since '74 when Neil peart replaced John Rutsey.

Interesting note on def leppard, by the way:

I have a friend, and she says by the look of them and their stage, their act, etc... they look like a really, really old band.

So then if they're really, really old, then what is ZZTop?
