Half a million dollars, with all 83 most likely spoken for before they go out? Not much of a gamble. Not much profit in it, either, but enough to justify the fun for the Custom Shop. I don't think the CS builders regard themselves as the arbiters of who may or may not be deserving of a signature guitar; they probably run the idea past a potential candidate, and if they're into it the wheels get set in motion. Not every famous player wants a signature instrument. And if one of the guys who says "yes" is a good-looking, successful, talented and affable fellow who happens to be an aspirational figure for younger players and who can sell albums to someone other than guitarists, are you going to say "Well, John, we'll get back to you after we figure out a way to get that radiohead dude to agree to a run of relic Tele Pluses..." ?

Heh. Sorry if that comes across as being a little snippy, I don't mean it that way... it's just... I mean, I don't even have much of an idea of who John Mayer really is -- he seems to have plenty of facility there, no doubt he's better than me and everyone I know combined, I'm just not into it -- but one look at the guy and what he's achieved so far and I can see why I'd cut him a piece of whatever action I had going...

Don't mention it, everybody likes John, this is a guitar players Forum, I'll get in the ring with anybody, thats the nature of the beast.

Oh believe me, I HAVE given his music a chance and I HAVE searched out his bootleg work and sat painfully through a concert. Still not impressed, at least not for all the hype he gets in the "media" for being some talented amazing musician. So I have to disagree with you on the above quote and I think many if not most would as well.

Well its different Strokes for Different folks. Its good that you at least were objective in finding that you don't like him, many people on the net just bash on the guy b/c thats the cool thing to do.

Personally I've never understood the big Hoopla about the Beatles or Clapton. I think they are overrated, but I can respect what they did musically. Many people think they are the greatest ever, but some don't. It will always be this way. Not everybody will appreciate every artist, thats just the way things go.

I'm pretty sure, Fender made a smart business decision. All 83 of these will sale, I'm pretty sure of that.

and there's probably another thousand "Joe Schmoes" that the world has never heard who can outplay them, so what? I wasn't professing that Mayer is God's gift to guitar, I just think him a competent guitarist who writes a few songs I like.

WOW. But like you said, different strokes. I've never been a huge Beatles fan either though.

With respect to my thoughts therein it had a subsequently occurred to me that there are second purchaser issues with regard to new gear which might be of concern with respect to warranty. This is very true with the Custom Care program, though not applicable in this case.

With respect to my post on the Forum, there certainly was no ill-wll intended and my use of the term 'respectful' was chosen with that very much in mind. There has been so much verbage on this that, as with the Gilmour project running two threads last year, I thought it helpful to redirect you to where all the action had been to the current.

I find the passion for this artist and the project a tad overwhelming, and have expressed my point of view elsewhere at times, but certainly without any intention of raining on anyone elses parade.

Given your interests in general, Eldred's Forum might be a first go to every day. It certainly is for me.

Not a personal favorite, but an accomplished, talented, and creative artist who has found a broad-based formula which works for him. His blues chops, which I prefer, have found him holding his own on stage with the likes of Buddy Guy and Eric Clapton.

If you want to remain at peace with a large segment of the following in the Community, I would definitely remain 'cool' when it comes to Mayer.
