Something I used to enjoy watching here in Australia on free-to-air TV was The Guitar Show... the original 13 episodes still get an airing from time to time. Most of the content seemed to have been shot when artists were out here touring, so there was some footage there that was next to impossible to see anywhere else at the time. Heh. How YouTube has changed my lossy life!

If you Google "The Guitar Show" you'll find some links to episodes on Google video...

During 2001 we interviewed some of the best in the business, including Angus Young, Ben Harper, Richie Sambora, Steve Morse from Deep Purple/Dixie Dregs, Eric Johnson, Martin Taylor, Tommy Emmanuel, Tony Joe White, Duke Robillard, Taj Mahal, Little Feat, National steel guitar virtuoso Bob Brozman, Buddy Miller, Jeff Lang, Brett Garsed, Slava Grigoryan, Will Ray, Jerry Donahue, Rod McCormack, Andy Summers and Roger McGuinn. This is all new footage and exclusive to The Guitar Show.

Deffinetly a great idea and one that could possibly come to fruition. There are so many styles of guitar playing plus there are the degree of levels where players are at. PLUS amp and gear talk, pedals guitars that are coming out. You can fill time with concerts from the past ,interviews with old and new players and everyone here would be tuning in. I do not believe it could run 24 hours so the mention already of aiming it towards other instruments ,drums, bass and keyboards makes more sense but I see tremendous potential. Who would of thought the Cooking Channel would of done so well.

Everybody eats. Everybody likes food. Every single person in the world gets hungry.

That's why EVERYBODY in the media business knew that Food Network would be a hit. "Who would have thought?" Everybody.

Just as everybody knows that under the current cable business model, there will not be a Guitar Network, just as there is no, say, Scrapbooking Network. Things would have to become even more wildly fragmented for that to happen, and fragmentation will likely stop at a certain point as it becomes impossible to monetize content sufficiently to pay for production.

Thanks for the link Mr.Bill"....Great comments and opinions.Maybe "THE MUSICIAN CHANNEL" might be a better way to go.Not everyone owns a Hot Rod or gets to go hunting for white tail deer....but they watch that channel. And I would say that most...most everyone knows or has more than one or two friends that have an interest or owns at least one guitar.Does "everyone" that owns a gun watch all the hunting and gun shows on T.V.? Probably not.But most everyone knows someone who owns a gun.But it might just be up to what guitar makers would sponsor such a channel. The $money$ is what makes up the minds of the people in T.V.land.And I can't rember the last Fender commercial I watched on T.V.But I for sure would be watching "THE GUITAR CHANNEL"

It's not a matter of such a concept not being "lowest common denominator" enough (A statement that implies that Guitar TV would somehow be more "highbrow" than everything else on television, which is bunk). It's a matter of the concept being "not a big enough audience" enough.

Look around your neighborhood. How many home owners engage in some kind of home improvement or maintenance (and might watch HGTV)? How many people there cook for themselves or a family (And might watch FOod Network)?

Now, how many play the guitar?

There ya go. No numbers means no channel.

I would watch G string TV  I mean GTV :)

I would be up for it. I could envision there being NAMM updates, guitar lessons, new product info, demos, and even updates regarding the gear that different bands are using. There could be comparisons between guitars, pickups, amps, pedals and more.
I think you hit the nail on the head.

Okay, 'nuffa this jive-talking.

Let's run with this and have a bit of serious-silly fun.

How about a list of a potential week's worth of programming, including suggested commercial sponsors? Then we can do the 2nd week and then...the 5th month.

Personal feeling is if it was "The Musicians' Channel, there would be a bleep of a lot more viewer / sponsor potential. A guitar show aired twice a day, stuff on orchestral and folk instruments, pieces on famous musicians, music history, a "just starting out" show for varied instruments, maybe even an hour a day of viewer-submitted "open mic" recordings.

Ladies and gentlemen, fellow pickers and musicians, start your creative engines!

What?

After such an enthusiastic start, when a suggested guitar-only or all-imusic channel is proposed, no suggestions for content and program schedule?

Come on, fellow pickers.

Okay, then 'am going to take a poke at some potential features. Remember, royalties will have to be paid for playing commercial music; is there a way for a channel to buy a blanket ASCAP style worldwide one and what would it cost? Assume they can be had and varied deals can be cut because musicians want to bee seen:

Amadeus the Movie
The Song Remains The Same
The Buddy Holly Story
The RIchie Valens Story
Woodstock, the '69 documentary
Beatles on Ed Sullivan
The Sound Of Music
West Side Story
South Pacific
Grease
REM on Satutrday Night Live
Back To The Beach
Showboat
Porgy and Bess

You get the idea, now have at...!

Ok how about this for a line up:

1: Guitar Care Tips--30 minute show on how to care for various guitars and finishes.

2: Learn A Song--60 minute show with a reandom guest guitarists and goes through the how to's to play a particular song. 1st show could be Destroyer with Ace Freley (example).

3: Gear Heads--30 minute show on different gear. This show could feature all sorts of gear for guitars and basses.

4: Getting Started--A show for the soon to be player. What to look for while in a music shop, what's a good deal, and spending within budget.

5: Guitar Building--A show on how to build your own guitar from scratch.

6. Mod Squad--Name speaks for itself. How to mod your axe. From changing pickguards to soldering pots.

Any other guitar/musical shows for the musician...

Hello CrazyHorse1959,

Back in '73 there was a 16 week series
"Baxters Guitar Workshop". I never saw the programs
but I did get a music book from the series and of late
found this youtube vid with Clarence White & Bob Baxter.

As a youngster this is one of the first songs I learned

Here's the link.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alX4xbiqMss

Cheers.

Mr. Bill, I thought I was the only one here that knew anything about Bob Baxter. :o He was a guitar teacher at McCabes's in L.A. He did a column in Guitar Player Magazine. I still string my guitars the way I learned from him in his column. When I hear a lot of the problems on the forum about buzzing and not staying in tune, I think people just need to know about his method.

Okay, back to the suggestions, and again, this is for "The Music Channel," because "The Guitar Channel would peter out after a month or two at most. Only so many times you can watch someone restring a Strat and learn how to make an LP scream insanely..

A tour inside Fender
The Patsy Cline Story
A tour inside Gibson
Evolution of the modern drum kit
A tour inside Taylor
Histoy of tje Diggeredoo
History of the Saxaphone
Antonio Stradivari's story
White Depression Bluesmen
Giuseppe Guarneri's Story
Medieval Music
Gregorian Chant
The String Quartet, How it Came to be
The Les Paul Story
The Chet Atkins Story
The Duke Ellington Story

Come on, fellow pickers. Enough suggestions and someone might think this is a good idea!.
