How many of you younger players are using lessons to learn your instrument? How many are just learning stuff from others and playing the same song over and over till you learn it?

I have been using free websites and videos on the internet for scales, theory, etc. along with learning some songs I like on my own. I have been debating about taking lessons. There was an article in my local newspaper a few weeks ago that interviewed area guitar instructors. They stated that most of their students today just come in with a song they want to learn and are not interested in learning theory or fundamentals. I like to know why to do something, not just how.

i've been playing for 5 years now... and i'm completely self taught... actually... i play right around 10 intstruments last time i counted... and the only music lessons i've ever had were 2 weeks of sax lessons the summer after 6th grade... which was about 7 or 8 years ago... i haven't suffered from not having lessons... but i know that some people work better in that environment... i guess it just depends on the person...

i'm actually starting to teach guitar, keyboard and voice lessons... some of my students do fairly well, but take a good bit of instruction... others just pick it up more or less on their own... like i said... i think that it mostly just depends on the person...

i haven't taken any guitar lessons but i did take piano lessons for around 6 years so i have a good understanding of music notation, thoery etc.

i've been self teaching myself for around 4 months now and i don't think i'm doing too bad for only playing a little while. i like to do covers and i write my own stuff a little bit and then i sneak in learning scales and some technique. i love it though

Good question. I play violin over seven years and I did not had any problem whit learning how to play guitar. Now I play guitar pretty good for almost one year but everything I learned, I learned it myself. Well it was hard at the beginning.

Well i'm 50 and never had a lesson in my life, though sometimes i wish
i could read notes.
My advantage is that i can improvise,i played with lots of people who
could read music, new everything about scales/harmonies and chord
progressions but couldn't play a solo in a 12 bar blues.
Don't ask me to explain to you what rhythm or scale i'm playing.
I did tought myself some basic things about chords so i can play them
in more than one position on the fingerboard.
Still learning now playing jazz after thirty years of playing blues/rock and
Santana latin.

Peter

You young whippersnappers are lucky. When I was a kid, all we had were Mel Bay chord encyclopedias. They always had a picture of a 40 year old guy who looked 75 and played a giant acoustic jazz box.

And to buy them, we had to walk to the store in three feet of snow uphill there and back.

I have been self taught for the most part. My Dad and Grandpa both play and have always taught me stuff but do to the difference in Music taste. I have taken Guitar class in school but I had a lazy teacher that emphasized on tab very disapointing. But I think I play fairly well I have been playing both guitar and Bass for over 10 years.

Can make a big diff. if you've had a music background in the past from school or other training. Otherwise, are you going to be learning by ear alone, or getting into tabs and books? These days the play along capability of recording, and playing along as a second guitar, dvd or other modes can be very helpful. However, a second person with more experience may offer the kind of criticism that will help you grow-much more quickly?
