Decades ago, there were dang few Fender guitars in metro Chicago. And despite Fender having THE cosmic-coolest catalogues in the closing years of the 60s and many of the hippest players, Gibson and later Ibanez lawsuit copies of discontinued Gibsons were the guitars of choice, for a long time.

'Finally puchased an AS Stratocaster in '90 and gleefully, additional Fender guitars, basses and amps since, spiralling upward and outward, progressively more in stupid-passionate amour with the whole Fender vibe-e-community-affiliation-books-coolness factor- glorious/tragic/dumb/glorious history-tone-comfy playing-instrument personalities-quirks jive.

Personally feel, a Mosrite is still the hottest guitar for pure oozy sexiness and playability and a classical has a timeless appeal which can't be beat and a jazzbox is breathtaking beyond compare when you need to play one.

But in the sunlight and given the number of functional brain cells of today, idly perusing the '09 catalogue and instruments hanging on the wall and lying around the music room and remembering the Tele's "heritage" and old Cyber-Twin's hipness and Strat's "love" and fretles Jazz' smoothness ...

...Decided. Gave in.

Screw it, 'am selling out, admitting to having mental-morphed into a genuine but uncertified Fender solidbodies & amps mega-geek. 'Gonna guiltlessly enjoy riding the whole affiliation trip vibe be-in Fender use-digging-voyage thing with the casual but constant fervour of the most odoriferous, oil-stained hardcore Harley rider-mechanic-enthusiast. Where to sign?

Anyone else have any stories or thoughts? Or sympathies?

And oh, does Fender sell underwear? Fingernail clippers? Pet food? Combs? Dishwasher detergent, Toothpaste? Lawn fertilizer? Soap? Frozen pizza? Towels? Beer? Socks? House paint? Vacuum cleaners? Tires? Vitamins? Stainless flatware...?

Lol, welcome to the club, they got me too! Once I got a couple Strats I ditched all my "pointy" guitars permanently.

Now I just gotta get a copy of The Stratocaster Chronicles and my Fender Fan-Boy membership card!!

Thank you for the comments, so far. Good company to be in.

And nopers, ain't Tom Wolfe by 3,468.27 long shots. But thank you. That is an incredibly kind "question."

'Am a part-time writer though.

Yeah, I think they were expensive back in the '60s. But was it more expensive than Gibson? I'm not really sure.

Unfortunately, it is now a corporation, and probably is into the money-making thing. But who knows? But Strats are amazing. I'd just wish they kept the legacy of the company going forward, i.e. innovating. Tele players don't like strats because of the volume control and middle pickup. Just make a TeleStrat lol. In fact, I might just post this as a topic...

So you're not Tom, huh?

Oh well: then I guess I can't do my line about this being your Fender-Electric-Kool-Aid-Acid-Guitar.

Oops - I just did...

Cheers - C

Wow I know that feeling it hit me in the 70s and everytime I say well no sense in buying another Tele or Strat as I have more than enough out comes the Dave Murray Strat. And though I am no huge fan at all of Maiden there is something about that guitar that keeps calling me. Then I had to go check one out and since I cant play right now I was just staring then I start talking to a guy about it and he goes lets here how it sounds well need to say it sounds like it looks and that is what I have been thinking of for the last month. I have promised my wife I would not buy another ax until I have my surgery. Will let you guys know if I cave.

Helloooooo McFly!! Excuse ME :?: :?: ........take a Fender Stratocaster body, turn it upside down, slap some humbuckers on it  and you have all of the aforementioned :?: :?: THAT is originality, clarity, and aptness of thought in guitar development........I don't think so. :!:

Hendrix, turned it upside down but didn't bother remaking the guitar......just the way it was played
