If you can dig up some old copies of Guitar Player magazine, Tommy Tedesco had a column that had loads of real-life experiences and situations that he had run into. It's very informative and a good read.

If you can find any of the old GP mags with his column, I'm sure that you'd enjoy them. I'm looking forward to the documentary about the 'Wrecking Crew.'

Tommy Tedesco, Carol Kaye, Hal Blaine, Plas Johnson, Larry Knetchel (who passed away recently), Earl Palmer, Jim Gordon, Ollie Michell and others that made up the L.A. studio scene.

I used to read his articles.

I still have a ton of GP mags from the 80's. Most folded open to certain pages and with the covers missing. :)

Weren't Leon Russell and Glen Campbell part of the group also?

They were both well known Session players. Glen Campbell can play with the best of them. But some other great session work was done by Duane Allman.

Big Cat you have received some excellent advice, but if you are a young guy=early 20s scrap that idea and look to form a band. The session scene is just about completely dead. This is not the 60s,70s,or 80s, when you had the LA and NY scene with the great session players Miami Mike mentioned surprised Mike left out Larry Carlton and Steve Lukather. If you ever check out Lukathers studio credentials the guy played on over 700 albums with every great singer or band you could imagine, If you did not know that is his riff on Michael Jacksons Beat It. Those guys were payed well especially when they got into double or triple scale but probably made more money with one hit with Toto than all his studio work combined. And to quote him those days are over. There is still a session scene in Nashville but it would be near impossible to crack. With players like Brent Mason and Albert Lee plus a lot of other cats that are mind boggling players with hundreds of sessions under there belt you get where I am coming from. You also have the Broadway pits with maybe 10 chairs to fill and those guys all know each other so thats locked up. Hey you got your ax and can play you can make some money but if you are a young guy I would put my all into forming a band and giving it your best shot while your young just like everyone else on this forum has done. Remember way more people became famous and rich with three chords and a good melody. When you look at it the best players in the world and the top shredders have made the least amount of money in the guitar world. Off the top of my head a band like say Creed made more money than every shred great combined. So I would go that direction and remember you have a friend for life in your guitar as it will always be there to put a smile on your face and never a knife in your back.

Dunno i've done a couple of death/thrash tracks amongst other stuff. I've never been employed to write though. That was all plenty of years ago. I just went round a couple of studio's in brum, worcester and dudley. Gave em my contact details on a card with the message 'guitarist for recording hire'. Mainly used for producers projects. Bands tend to have someone or know someone who can fit the bill. Particularly with a popular instrument like guitar. Some time in, around other session musicians that i got to suss out the pay grading system. It basicaly increases your amount per hour dependant on how many successful records you've played on. So the guy who plays guitar for madonna gets nine squillion quid a hour, i get a bag of chips and a can of john smiths.

you are local to worcestershire? where abouts? I was raised in the st peter's area of worcester...

Most of the cats that played with Fagen and Becker in Steely Dan were pretty decent session players.

Steve Lukather (and his son) are also good session players.

Bob Metzgar is another LA studio veteran.

Tommy Tedesco was the best (and funniest) IMO.

Steve Lukather's got some of his stuff on eBay. I guess everyone finds out that they don't need everything they get?
