I own three Fender guitars of different types, and they all have this recessed "hole" on the front of the body. This hole does not go all the way through the body, obviously, is hidden under the pickguard, and seems to serve no purpose.

Can anyone shed any light on this mystery?

That would be a guide hole for the routers they use.

I found a dime in my MIM bass. It is second hand, and a Canadian dime, so obviously put in there by the guy i got it from. it always had a weird rattle, now I know why.

It's to mount the body to a jig for CNC machining. My 72 don't have one.

I've never heard of someone intentionally making their instrument rattle before.

My buddy may have smoked some hippy lettuce from time to time.

I kind of think he put it in there before he gave it to me, just to screw with my head.

that's mojo now!

if it were me, I think I'd just glue down that dime!

what year is the dime? I ask because if it were old enough, it could be silver!

And the guitar doesn't even increase in value--but you can pay GST on an item or two from the loonie store.

Maybe a plastic guitar?
