Aside from my strats, I also enjoy playing guitars with P90 pickups. These guitars have the mean, rude attitude sound.

My Les Paul BFG, with a P-90 in the neck position. I think it was a guitar designed more for metal, but I think it sounds great for blues. I still like my Strats better, but I like it a lot for a Gibson.

These are all nice but i have a few questions. I'm kinda new to the whole electric thing. What does a P90 sound like? Is it a mix of a humbucker and a single coil or does it produce a different tone all together? What music is a P90 mainly used for?

P-90's can be used for anything.

They are in fact single coils, but do not sound like typical Fender singles because they're a big honking magnet instead of a little skinny one. Thus P-90's retain clarity like a single, but have more "body" or oomph to them. So somewhere in between a Fender single and a humbucker. The traditional P-90 tone has a lot of midrange to it, where Fender singles tned to be glasier and HB's beefier.

Some famous rock records with P-90 tone would be "Missisppi Queen" by Leslie West with Mountain, and the Who's "Live At Leeds." A lot of classic punk rock recordings use P-90's as well-- pretty much all the Buzzcocks guitar work is P-90's, as well as Johnny Thunders with the New York Dolls and The Heartbreakers. Also, John and George of the Beatles played Epi Casinos that had P-90's, c. Revolver. Blues rocker George Thorogood uses a thinline Gibson ES-125 with twin P-90s.

For a long list, go here:

Thanks for the info and link Brian Krashpad. I have a 1970's fatstrat copy that just might get a P90 set up that is if i doesn't cost me too much to have it done.

No worries, my pleasure. Just make sure you get a humbucker-sized replacement pickup if you don't want to also change scratchplates, as a regular P-90 is a different size/shape from a HB.

Yup, pretty much of what Brian has said is dead on about the P90s. I would also add Pat Travers and Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day, both use Gibson Les Paul Specials and Jrs exclusively that have P90 pickups. You can do a youtube search on P90s and you will see some great samples.
