Okay, so my wife and I have 3 wonderful kids and at one time all of them had moved out on their own. I had taken one of my son's rooms and transformed it into a pretty nice practice space. Now, due to the economy downturn, etc., they are slowly but surely returning home. It appears that I will be moving my space to the basement. I don't know for how long, but I am worried about keeping some of my equipment down there. It stays around 62-65 degrees there, but I am more concerned with what humidity might do to my things. I have two MIM Strats, a MIM Tele, a Squier Standard Strat and a Squier Jagmaster. For amps, I have a BDRI and a VOX AD30VT.

Any ideas?

Might be worth making into a finished basement and having your own little music room with temperature control?

I should have said that it is a finsihed basement. with carpeted floors and paneled walls. We have previously had some water issues ther, but have a sump pump installed now. We could definitely get a dehumidifier. I have talked about getting our furnace/air conditioning guy extend the duct into that room, but don't know what that would cost. Among my concerns are having an expensive tube amp down there. I will ensure that everything is off the floor, but just wondered about the enviornmment there. Maybe I'll keep the BDRI and most of the guitars upstairs.

Yep, deumidifier. Keep the guitars in cases when you're not playing them.

60's isn't bad for guitars. That's a cool late summer day in Michigan. I'd be more concerned about the humidity or lack of it, more so with solid wood acoustics.

If there's any concern with water or flooding, I might put them things up higher. On a couch off the floor, you can make risers with 2x4, milk crates, etc if you want to save $$.

I've had basement studios in three houses. Michigan summers get pretty humid and winters can get bitter cold. Never had a problem, and I have some nice gear that I'm real picky about.

I have had several basement jam rooms. As long as you regulate the climate, and make sure there's no flood dangers you'll be fine.

regulate the humidity. Keep it dry. If you are in a single unit dwelling being underground helps insulate the sound from your neighbors, if it's a duplex or townhouse you can shake the whole thing, heh don't ask me how I know.

Strat2K6 I would be jumping for joy. I have exactly the same set up as you and you could not ask for a better jam room. In fact once you settle in nobody in the house will be seeing you that much. lol The only problem I had which I dont think you do is that in the winter it used to get kind of cold down there as in NY we have all 4 seasons but I had the heating taken care of and that is my sanctuary.KEEP ON ROCKIN

I use my basement but won't leave instruments there.
Amps, home theater, and server is down there mostly permanently and have not had any problems.
But so is a 120gal fish tank, room is a bit humid.

Buy yourself a hygrometer, can get them cheap like 2$ or 3$, it lets you know how much humidity is there.
Right now my livingroom is at 70% humidity which is actually high for wood instruments.
In the winter with the heating on it can drop below 30% which is too low for wood instruments.

Not sure how it affects solid bodies but it can really mess up the wood in acoustics.
