Music is like the world, musical innovation is cartography. In the beginning, there was nothing: people like Scotty Moore, Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly were quick to discover and claim new continents. By the 1960s, the Stones and Zeppelin -- among many, many others -- had take the exploration much further. For their daring, their innovations, they are venerated and revered.

As the years pass, there are fewer and fewer areas in the world of guitar rock that remain unexplored. Nothing will ever come close to the excitement, the brand new feeling of musical exploration the mid to late 1960s. They are the Columbuses, the Marco Polos of our generation.

There is always room for great songwriting. That is where we really see the drop off. To put a finer point on it ... will we ever see a time where great conceptual works like Sgt Pepper, the Who's Quadrophenia, Rush's 2112, or even Queensryche's Operation Mindcrime will ever be equalled again??

... ummm, I think not ...

IMHO a lot of the mindless pap of the 2000's is best represented by Hillary Duff.
Not liking much of what I've been hearing lately, apparently to become a "star" this decade you need to win a TV reality game show.

It is no different than in the 50s, 60s and 70s when the biggest sellers aside from a few were TV stars. Your Osmonds, Nelsons, etc.

I think music is in a better place now. It is personal, not overproduced(except for mainstream rock which is worse than ever). There is nothing like raw energy, truth from the heart. I'll take The Ramones Rocket to Russia, The Clash's London Calling, Dead Kennedys Bedtime for Democracy or Against Me's Reinventing Axl Rose over any 70s or 80s buttrock with technical shredding. I dislike cold technical rock, but if you want that kind of thing, there are the Dragon Force's, Coheed and Cambria's, and Mastodon's of today.

Music is rather widespread in the world and varied movements will happen and flourish and fade in varied places. There are likely supergroups at varied places in the world; many of us are not aware of them and do not seek them out.

And re being worried about your favorite or for that matter, any form of music "perishing," remember, even trees and mountains and stars have life spans...
