I was just thinking about this last night. Every decade had its greats. What happened to the super group? Do we not have a modern day equivalent?

50's
Elvis

60's
Beatles
The Who
Cream
Jimi Hendrix

70's
Led Zeppelin
Kiss
Black Sabbath

80's
AC/DC
Iron Maiden
Van Halen
Motley Crue
Metallica

90's
Guns and Roses

and some truly great super groups that span many Decades such as the one the only....

The Rolling Stones

(this list is not meant to be all inclusive by any means, I just wanted to list some examples to get my point across)

I was trying to come up with a real Super Group for this decade and I couldn't think of one. There has got to be at least one out there. But it's not coming to me.

So I pose this question........

Where is the modern day Super Group for this decade?

Although not a band I personally enjoy, U2 might be a good candidate.

I was thinking the same thing, but I would put them in the 90's more then this decade. That's when they had the biggest success.

As much as they bore me to tears, people seem to love Coldplay.

I coudn't name a single song from them. Not that that rules them out. But could they be truly considered a Super Group? Not on the same scale as some of the bands listed above. Just my opinion

Is there a band out there now that we will look back at and will be able to say they ruled this decade like Zep and Kiss ruled the 70's?

There are many rock 'n roll bands out there, that keep the music alive. More than I can actually count. But, unfortunately, people only want to listen to emo pop/metal, hip hop, and commercial bubble gum pop. Yes, people do like it, but the majority wouldn't like classic rock too much, they're already used to what they're listening now.

However, since people will just eat up what they're fed, if some smart producer decides to market classic rock, maybe more people will listen to it! Yet again, it's all about the money now. It was always like that, but at least there was some innovation back when, as there is now, just not widespread, much to my despair.

there are hundreds of bands (if not thousands) keeping rock and roll alive. But what I'm saying is there are no more Super Groups like we all grew up with. At least none that come to mind.

When you say "Super Group" I usually take that to mean a group of people who were well known and famous in other bands, and then went on to be a member in a band with other famous people...like the Travelling Wilburys or something like that. But anyways...

I feel that there will probably not be too many bands to ever achieve the status of many of the bands you have listed because people are taking advantage of being able to discover bands on their own, and bands now have more ways to get their music out to their specific audiences...and there are what many people would probably consider supergroups out there, just how many will stand the test of time is another matter, and its all a matter of personal tastes. Nickelback is huge for being what I feel is one of the crappiest bands out there...3 Doors Down still keeps putting out records, though I see no reason why people liked them to begin with...A lot of people were happy that Creed reunited, while personally I never liked the fact that they originally formed a decade ago...These are all bands that some people out there feel should be on the list you made for the 90s or 21st century, but I don't think so...You talk to a metal head, they will say Slayer, Korn or Slipknot should be on there...

There are lots of different genres, but too many people out there think that if they like one sort of music, than thats all they can like, and you won't get what you are calling a "super group" out there. The original Woodstock is a great example...Most people back then probably considered Woodstock a concert with musicians...Today, people would probably try say it is a concert with Rock, folk, World, Bluegrass, Country, Blues, Oldies, Experimental, jazz, and fusion musicians to say the least...instead of just calling it all music, it gets labelled and that in turn, sends some people away...

I don't know if I am making any sense, but I don't mind the fact that there is not one huge band that everyone likes because in the 80s it go very boring when every single guitar magazine just kept coming out with lessons on how to tap or play like Eddie Van Halen....

let me clarify a little. By super group I mean a group that took a decade by storm. That when you think of a certain decade and rock and roll in that decade, you think of that band.

also by Super Group I am talking about a band that can draw ungodly huge crowds to see them. Like Kiss did in the 70's in Venezuela (I think) when they were the only band on bill and drew a crowd of (don't quote me on the number but I think this is the number I remember hearing) over 236 thousand!

sure there are modern day festivals that can draw crowds like that. But not a single band concert that can draw crowds that huge.

"Stewart was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. On 31st December on the same year he played in front on 3.5 million people on Copacabana Beach in Rio. This became and still is the largest audience for a gig ever. It has been noted, however, that it was also New Year's Eve."

Only Pope John Paul II has ever gathered a bigger audience, for anything.

Rod the Mod drew more people than all the separate Live 8 venues combined.

That kind of thing is dead. And rightfully so. The music industry has always been a pox.

Now it is easier than ever to form a band and get your music heard. And accordingly, people no longer have just radio stations and TV to find new music, so the taste is more tailored. And more wide spread. Thuis is an excellent turn for music. It inspires more creativity and less compromise since you don't ave to fit into a format for radio or censor yourself for red state america. You can be free to make your music from the heart.
