I always thought Les Pauls were made of mahogany.
Standard with maple top, Custom made of solid mahogany

ya this is how it works

almost all les pauls are capped with maple excluding certain customs (not all of them), black beauties, special runs/ special models.

now the model i'm talking about is a special model that gibson almost exclusively distributes to musicians friend, gc and a few other retailers. it is a natural wood (no paint just stain and a little nitro) and has the les paul standard burstbucker pros. it's only 750.00 U.S at musicians friend.

i just remeber seeing someone have it and i was wondering what they think.

In the line of Gibsons, all Les Pauls are great sounding guitars. I have to say my go-to Gibson is my '67 Firebird III. It blows away my Les Pauls hands down for sound and playability.

yep 750 us dollars.

ya i know thats an unbelievable price.
that's why it's the guitar i want. i know it's not a fender but it's as expensive as a highway one but it's ALL amerian and it comes with a hardshell case.

i guess gettin a tele will have to wait.

I've had one of those Vintage Mahogany LP's for about a year now. I just love it. I like it more then Standards I've owned. The lack of finish make for a very resonant guitar. The Burstbucker Pro's are fantastic pups. I still can't believe they're selling these for $799. It's Gibson, they could ask $1200 and people would pay it.

They aren't pretty, but you get a Les Paul with top o'the line pups for under a grand. Nice thing is you don't care if it gets dinged up...there's no finish anyway. Just a hunk o'mahogany.

Oh yeah, one way they can keep the price so low is they pretty much don't bother with the finish work. Fret ends are rough, setup is non exsistant. Even so, get that done and you're still under a grand for a real Les Paul.

Tonewise it's a LP all the way. Think Neil Young, Zep, Aerosmith....

You can get a Highway One Strat for just a touch over $500 at GC, and they'll throw in a hardshell case if you push them. I'm talking beautiful wine transparent nitrocellulose, like mine, or two-tone sunburst nitrocellulose. Out of every guitar in that store, my wine transparent caught my wife's eye for its looks. It's pure adler, not basswood or something like Ibanez uses to simulate adler, and man it is light, light, light. It's also very resonant and like all good guitars it can definitely be played without amplification. Nice neck radius, wide nut, jumbo frets, double cutaway I mean

you're playing blues in A and it's time to go downtown - you're going to be at fret 17, 19, 20, 21, 22 -

try it on a Les Paul and you'll see the neck's in the way and the lack of a double cutaway is why they came up with the Gibson solid.

Forget the Gibson with no paintjob. Get a Stratocaster. There's a reason the truly great guitar players go for them. It's no workingman's guitar. It's thoroughbred guitar royalty, and the Highway One is a real Fender Stratocaster at a great price.

strat cat while that may be for you it's not for me i'm a tele, jag, stang or lp person and the fret access isn't that big a deal to me. here are my reasons

the lp just feels right for me

i don't like how strats look (yes i went there)

i like a tele, jag, stang or lp sound

i play some heavier stuff sometimes

i like the natural wood

the lp is a once in a lifetime deal for me

i'm aloud to have my own opinion as are you

and btw i wish my guitar center was as lenient as yours! our manager (at least from my experience) wouldn't do that :)

As you say, everybody's entitled to their opinion. Mine can't be that surprising, since this is a Fender forum and there are plenty of Strat players around here.

"i don't like how strats look (yes i went there)"

I can't believe my eyes are seeing these words. A Highway One Stratocaster in wine transparent paint is a work of art. It's beautiful like a pretty woman is beautiful. It's a certain kind of design perfection - never better in the form of a guitar. No, it doesn't have mother of pearl inlays, and doesn't need to be tarted up because it is naturally lovely. The Stratocaster design is studied and taught in world-class design schools. That's got to be true because I read it on the internet. Also, it plays beautifully.

Beauty is a subjective judgment. Nobody can say a Gibson LP is not a good guitar, and I'm definitely not saying that (I also wouldn't say that about an Ibanez Vai, which is good as well). Best of luck with your quest for that Gibson.

okay just so you know i do like fenders a lot (especially teles, jags, and stangs) and i would normally get one but the gibson deal works for me. my next guitar will definitely be a fender. i can't choose which brand i like overall. i don't think anyone truly can. they're both works of art and sound.

and i guess i have to admit that a nice wood grain sunburst strat is pretty sharp.

It's a great guitar, I traded mine towards my es 335, I think it's nice to have both Fenders and Gibsons if possible, the LPVM with burstbucker pups is a great axe, I certainly miss mine, I would be surprised to hear anyone regretting owning one, or finding a better Gibson for 750 USD

The Vintage Mahogany LP is a Studio with no finish and a mahogany cap. No GC nearby? The VM LP is sold at Musicians Friend, Sweetwater.....order one up, get the local guitar tech to do the finish work and you've got a LP studio for under a grand. It really is a nice guitar.
