Ha!
Ya ancient thread brought back to life today by someone that wants to sell you pie-an-o lessons on dvd.
Hilarious! I'd rather have my pie-on-a-plate.

All is good it is a valid topic for many!

One thing I couldn't tell you in 2007 was to do regular stretching exercises with your hands and forearms to keep them flexible and supple. I found out the hard way that hand and forearm muscles can become tight after years of playing. Also these days people have become too dependant on tuners to the point that they can't rely on their ears anymore.I was given a tuner with a guitar I bought and my Vox AD120 VTH has one but I never use it.The other night I was at a jam and they all used tuners-I just said"Gimme an E"and went on from there by ear and had her tuned before the tuner guys.

I listen to every song carefully and repeat it several times until I memorize the tune then I play the song on my own. I know most of you guys do these and for me it really works.. :D

I'm pretty new. I dabbled here and there over the years but never got past cowboy chord strumming. Been taking lessons for about three months now. I try to practice more than once everyday for at least 1/2 hour at a time. Here's my routine currently:

I start out with some warm up exercises consisting of some variation of an alternate picking/string skipping exercise prescribed by my teacher. I do this with a metronome, and ratchet up the bpm over time. This usually takes about 10 minutes, though sometimes I get carried away with it.

After that, I'll do all of the following three, but not always in the same order:

Rythmic notation practice - playing chords or single notes to rhythm notation from a sheet. I'm not learning to sight read persay, but my teacher is big on rhythm and the ability to read it off a sheet.

Songs - I'm always working on 1 or two songs that contain some element of what I am working on at the moment. None of them are sounding super tight yet, but I'm getting there.

Fretboard knowledge - memorizing the notes on the fretboard. Got the 5th and 6th string more or less down, the rest will follow.

In addition to the above, I do a fair amount of screwing around, or playing a I IV V and trying it in all keys and different voicings. I'm about to buy a G-DEC 3 so I can play with backing tracks and try out different things. Eventually I want to play out in some way or another.
