That is so odd that he died 19 years ago today...I bought my first SRV CD today. I was reading a post from texasguitarslinger about SRV and thought I'd check him out. I like what I'm hearing. RIP SRV...thanks for the music.

Hey man, you just made my day. :D

I remember the day after he passed, when it was announced, I was totally stunned. I was playing seriously at the time and he was a great influence upon me on several levels. His commitment, mastery, humility and deep respect for those who came before him were unending.

In the mid-80's I discovered the blues masters: BB King, Albert King, Albert Collins, Howlin' Wolf, Lightnin' Hopkins and was just flooered by what I'd heard. I was a teenager whose preference in music before this had been hard rock/heavy metal. There was something incredible about the way the music spoke to my heart. I immediately began to wonder why people weren't still playing "this kind of music." A short time after being introduced to the original blues masters, I then ran into SRV and was floored to discover that someone was still playing the blues as it had been played, originally. Much later I ran into the Allman Brothers and Gary Moore, but still, Stevie Ray was the first modern authentic blues man I heard. And I still have his music in my heart.

May he Rest in Peace.

Thanks for all the music Stevie!

I just know that in 50+ years people will be hearing Stevie's music for the first time and it will make them feel good, just like it made me feel good when I bought one of his CDs not so long ago.

Hi Jay: you've mentioned it in the past, but I don't think you told us the full story before. An amazing "I was there" moment.

SRV ain't my main man by a fair distance (I didn't even really get into his music till he was gone, sadly). But some of the anti-SRV views that get aired here sometimes surprise me a bit.

He wasn't the guitar messiah, assuredly, but he was a nice player with a very attractive sound, and he also happened to do a lot to keep a certain type of music current at a time when rock and pop was heading in a very dismal direction.

His anniversary gets a friendly salute from me, for sure.

Cheers - C

I can't imagine anyone having something negative to say about SRV. He's not my 'favorite' guitarist, I actually don't have one. But the man was definitely extremely creative and gifted.

I never understand why people rate and compare guitarists, especially when there's so many different styles and genres. Kurt Cobain, Ynqwie, S.R.Vaughn, Randy Rhoads, all extremely creative and gifted people who shared some really cool music with the world, why compare them? They're all completely different but equally "good."

Still kinda shaking my head that anyone could think badly of SRV. People can be so negative and hateful, I have my suspicions it's jealousy over other peoples creativity.

About a month before Stevie died, he played here in my home town. A bunch of my buddies, who I was jamming with at the time were going to the show and they had an extra ticket. They offered it to me, but I had to work late that night. I said I'll catch him the next time he comes around. Well...I should have gone! My one friend, who was pretty young(and VERY talanted) at the time somehow made his way onto SRV's dressing room, met him and actually jammed with him! (I'm Not Kidding)
Here's a picture he had taken that night. 8)
