Since the fretboard is made of wood would not a wood stain work? You can get little cans of wood stain for just a couple of dollars.

You'd have to determine if such stain was also non-penetrating nor injurious to the finish. The polish is likely a combination of waxes which is adsorbed into the microscopic surface irregularities of the neck's finish, whereas the stain's principal vehicle, a penetrating organic solvent, would definitely attack and break down the finish on the neck.

I've got plenty of kiwi from when we used to have to polish our boots in the Army. Now I know what I can do with it...nah, maybe not.

Surely the lacquer needs to be off the wood before staining?

No, not really. The satin necks are near bare, almost like raw wood -- totally different than, say, an MIA Std that has that thick finish on the neck. I doubt that doing the same thing on that type of neck would work. For those, though, with a thin-finish satin necks, it works really well to provide a nice tint instead of the stock bright-white finish. The tint is permanent, and it is not messy or irregular after you are done.

I got the idea quite a while back from a thread in this forum where the person posted their own excellent results. I figured even if it goes south, it is only a Squier. But the results were excellent. I am not trying to convince any one to do it ... I am just providing my personal experience. That is all.

Yep

Safe so far -- almost nine months (or so) since I did mine

Not yet -- But again ... These are just my own personal results. I am not trying to convince any one to either do it or not to. Also, I think every one gets the idea by now. So this is likely my last post on the matter...

try searching post markbass4444's previous posts..
I think all he did was remove the tuners, strings... etc then apply the brown polish with a cloth, leave em for 15-20 min and remove them with a dry cloth...

I just tried the Kiwi shoe polish trick on my new Bullet...and so far, so good. The wood definitely absorbed the tint, and I've only done one coat. I used some paper towels to buff it and it's actually shinier now than it was before.

I'll do a few more coats and then buff it nicely and take some photos.

Hopefully, it won't wear off with time....

Yes, pics would be cool!!! If possible, document it like Ceri's Strat and Goran's Tele projects.

unfortunately, like an idiot, i forgot to take photos of the guitar before i started in with the shoe polish. but i did take a shot of the neck with one part tinted and another not tinted that shows the difference pretty nicely. i'll post it tomorrow.
