I've seen people talk about tinting their necks with kiwi here. I was thinking about doing this to my bass. Please list the supplies and the steps ect ect.

I've never done or heard of that. I would think that "wax" would gum up like it does when you put too much on a shoe.

I've used wood stain before, since that's what it is actually for.

There's no supplies or procedure, per se other than the polish and a rag. You would just do it like you were polishing a pair of shoes. The only problem is, due to the plastic based finish on the bass, the distributed polish will immediately begin wearing off onto your hands, strings, clothing, furniture, carpeting, polishing cloth, inside of its case, its stand, etc, etc. until it eventually all wears off. And don't forget the smell, too.

This is yet another utterly ridiculous fad which you'd do best to avoid.

What we are talking about here is adding a slight tint to the "white neon" satin-finished (unfinished) necks. The Kiwi thing actually works really well. I did it to my Squier thinline. Similar to my MIM Std, it had the famous "neon white" satin finish. You apply a liberal coat of Kiwi brown, and wipe it all off. The Kiwi will lightly stain the wood. It looks really good. Further, there are no negatives after living with it -- it does not adversely affect the feel, comes off, etc.

The Squier was as light as the Fender before I did it (sorry that the pics are not the best ... not enough light). The results are more impressive in person:

I'll stick with guitar polish, and fretboard cleaner and polish.

Surely the lacquer needs to be off the wood before staining?

If it is, why not use Minwax Poly/Stain mix? The application process would be the same, the color more wood toned and a little poly seal never hurts

FYI, the fingerboard dye that Stew-Mac sells is just Feibing's black leather dye. You can pick some up at any shoe repair place.

Well bless my socks!

Not that I've ever used it - but now you told me I see it is on sale at shops near me, just as you say. For once Stew-Mac sell it cheaper, though not after you add shipping.

The things you learn here. Thanks Mike!

Cheers - C

Since the fretboard is made of wood would not a wood stain work? You can get little cans of wood stain for just a couple of dollars.
