And on The Beatles, in addition to a manager with a vision, wouldn't we all agree the one ace they had over everyone else was George Martin? A very unique kind of contribution that fella made. Cheers - C

Absolutely! I cited that fact in my comments when I said.."he found them George Martin.''

There's an old saying...."Chance favors the prepared mind." In its own 'write', all the pieces were there, and they fell into place beautifully. The rest, of course, is history. 8)

Doc

Quite. I was clumsily trying to amplify your point.

I remember Paul saying that early on they didn't really understand vocal harmony, and got it right or wrong in a rather hit and miss way. He said one of the first things George Martin did was sit them down and give them an hour tutorial on harmony, after which it was never a problem for them again. And in fact immediately became one of the most crucial elements in their success.

So many of us who have taken the unfortunate route of being largely self-taught would have killed for that kind of mentoring, along with all that followed (for Paul in particular) over the next few years. So much time saved!

Cheers - C

If you get the chance, you should check out the article in the Sept. 3 issue of Rolling Stone "Why the Beatles broke up".

Without a doubt, I can tell you that hours of a capella went into the vocals before we ever picked up the guitars. A documentary on Brian Wilson revealed that with respect to the Beach Boys as well.

It's the foundation of everthing you do.
