Whatever you do, get a copy of Live At Leeds. One of the best live rock recordings of all time. 8) Mike

And after you get, "Live at Leeds", get, "Who's Next" next.

To me, once Keith Moon died, that was the end of The Who. The band never was nor could be the same thereafter.

Face Dances and It's Hard are great albums. Yes, they are not even close to being as noteworthy as Who's Next, Who Are You, and Quadrophenia. But - if you are a Who fan - they are still very good albums.

These are great albums to go after once you have the above albums I mentioned, along with Live At Leeds and (of course) Tommy. I also recommend getting Pete Towshend's greatest hits.

Hi 01GT: I'm the biggest life-long Who fan going, but I godda say, I feel that's very generous to the '80s stuff! I remember when I saw them on a "greatest hits" tour ('bout 2001 I think) they did You Better You Bet. At the end Roger quipped; "the new one!" I don't think he was wrong to kinda forget about the intervening material...

(Though come to think of it Another Tricky Day works well live, don't it?)

stryder1017, to my taste - after a decent singles set - Quadrophenia and By Numbers are my faves. But you'll need to get 'em all to make your own judgement!

Ceri: I am a huge Who fan, too. While I agree It's Hard and Face Dances were not paramount works like (my favorite, too) Quuadrophenia, I still really like these albums. Like you said, "Another Tricky Day" is a great song. Also - off the top of my head - "Eminence Front" and "Athena" were excellent tracks, too. And ... for me ... I like "You Better, You Bet".

Hi again 01GT: I know you are and I like you for it! :D

And yes, you're right, Eminence Front is OK too.

I think we'd agree, stryder1017 needs to go buy ALL the albums doesn't he? And there's some pretty fine DVDs to be had, too.

And after that, even with only two remaining members and into their 60s, they still put on a helluva show, don't they? Catch a gig - it'll be better than most!

Cheers - C

I'm with Martin. Live At Leeds is one of THE best rock albums ever produced and the Who died with Keith Moon.

Pete Townsand related, Townsand's Ironman is great with John Lee Hooker as the Ironman.

Ceri: Yes ... complete agreement. Everything from "Tommy" to "Who Are You" is flat out mandatory music-library material.

63Supro: Excellent musical depth with the "Iron Man" reference. Just stay away from Townshend's "Psychoderelict". Not nearly as good...

I'll relate the Who (not musically but in terms of longevity) to another group that sometimes is a victim of it's own early genius--ZZ Top.

Full Disclosure--I am a HUGE ZZ Top fan; I own every official release (including Japanese- and Europe-only bonus releases), including CD singles, compilations, videos (a new double DVD is coming out in a couple of months! :D ) and numerous bootlegs (shh! don't tell anybody!). I even bought the VHS tape of Shelly Duvall's Rock & Roll Nursery Rhymes to see them play the "Three Men In A Tub".

...so you might say I like that Little Ol' Band From Texas just a little bit.

My favorite ZZ Top album is one of their later, lesser-known discs that didn't really sell well...1996's "Rhythmeen". It was harder-edged than any of their early discs, and it had none of the electronica-tinged 80's sound, but it was unmistakably pure ZZ Top. Raw, heavy and funky, this album rocked from start to finish.

My other favorite (second-fav?) is 1972's "Rio Grande Mud", from which most people will only recognize "Francine" and "Just Got Paid". Great songs, but that's ignoring the genius of "Sure Got Cold After The Rain Fell" (the greatest ZZ Top song in the history of ever), "Mushmouth Shoutin'", "Apologies To Pearly", and "Bar-B-Q".

But many people never bought these albums or listened to them because they weren't "Eliminator" or "Tres Hombres" or "Fandango!"...great, classic albums, but none of those discs were the be-all/end-all ZZ Top album.

...so as to whether you should invest in all the Who's (whose? whom's? :?:  ) discs, I say HECK YES! Buried on one of those albums might be the riff or song that inspires you to greater heights and musical appreciation than you ever expected.

...by the way, I think "Who's Next" is the best album by the Who ever.

Wow, that is high praise from a huge ZZ Top fan to not pick one of their classic albums. It must be really good. I will be checking out this album, for sure. Thanks for the head's up.

Right.

And also: why not pick up the DVD of The Kids Are Alright. Best rockumentry ever made (in my humble opinion).

You gotta see The Who as well as hear 'em to truly get it...
