Rolling Stone invented Jack White, just as they invent a new hipster god every few years. That explains their insistence that he is somehow important or influential.

As far as appreciation, you're on your own.

Its how he handles his live shows dude.
I went to see New York Dolls here in Belfast a few years back and they were opening for the Stripes. I was drunk and havin a good time so I stayed around for the main act and to my surprise he completely blew me away.
Its controlled chaos in a raw way and completely barkin!

Get on youtube.

17th of all time???? please tell me that means 17th out of 17 players...i know, of course it doesn't.

man that's the biggest crock of dung i've ever heard of. i won't go on a huge anti-jack white rant (which i easily could), but i HIGHLY doubt he's done anything to merit that kind of status.

anyway, there exist some flaws with this 100 greatest players crap.

1. Rolling Stone is just a big hype factory, and i believe a lot of the material involved in the "100 greatest" article is built on bandwagoning.

2(a.). the article is clearly not all-inclusive, as there are many talented players who have yet to be known by anybody. such players are unknown simply because they do not have the right connections in this clusterf**k society. also, some of such players are probably BETTER than some listed in the article (*cough cough* jack white *cough*). yea okay, it's near impossible to hear every single guitar player go to town on their axe, so in that case, DON'T BOTHER WRITING SUCH A RIDICULOUS DOCUMENT.

2(b.). Duane Allman is #2, which i certainly do not argue, but why is Dickey Betts #58? many people can't tell their playing apart. why else would they compliment each other so well?

3. as much as i love Hendrix and adore his music, i would not have placed him in number 1. he was a very creative and colorful player/writer, helped shape music as we know it in many ways, and could probably whoop my behind nonetheless, however i think it's safe to say that his number 1 slot was nothing more than the result of HYPE. there are so many wankers and Hendrix wanna-be's out there trying desperately to play Little Wing with the same exact tone and in the same Hendrix style, all plucking away at their Fender Strat's in pup positions 4 and 5, looking a-daze with their eyeballs rolled back as if they've become possessed Hendrix zombies. so it's no wonder Rolling Stone did this, and that Janie Hendrix makes a fortune on merchandise.

4. considering Kurt Cobain is #12, and Jack White is #17, WHY THE HELL IS...
Jeff Beck #14?
Warren Haynes #23?
Mark Knopfler #27?
Buddy Guy #30?
Peter Green #38?!!!
Brian May #39?
Robert Fripp #42?
Frank Zappa #45?
Dickey Betts #58?!!!!!
Hubert Sumlin #65?
Steve Howe #69?
Trey Anastasio #73?
Derek Trucks #81? <-(i'm actually not a big fan, but this is very surprising)
Robby Krieger #91? have they not heard his solo career?
Angus Young #96?
Robert Randolph #97? <-somebody HAD to screw up with this placement

that cannot be right... :? what a sacrilege and slap in the face! everyone is hailing Jack White as the newest great "blues" player, but there ain't any way in hell he could make a guitar sing like an opera singer the way that guys like Robert Randolph and Trucks do.

TOM MORELLO #26?!!!!! WHY IS HE EVEN LISTED?

Where is Henry Garza, Mato Nanji, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, John Butler, Jimmy Herring, Duke Robillard..etc etc etc?????

as you can see, as i flipped the pages there are constant WTF'S to consider, too many for me to list. this post is ragged enough with my random upset's that i did mention.

i knew i shouldn't have read the article, it only pissed me off, and i have lost all hope for the American public, who clearly know nothing about good music and playing. Rolling Stone wins #1 for ...

Worst Magazine of All Time
Worst Music Critics of All Time

I just don't understand the Jack White hype. He is a good musician and all that but....

I just don't see the greatness.

Jack white, no way, he has nothing to offer.
In terms of all time lists he should be at the bottom

Jack White? Guy should be the one you walk past at the train station, to drop some change in the good busker 50 feet away's guitar case.

Rolling Stone like to consider itself a driving force in the pop culture scene, rather than documenting it, as they should. they want to manufacture their stars, and their clientele, who rely on heir guidance rather than their own ears, follow like sheep. Rolling Stone, as far back as I remember has only been good for the odd photo, and to skim to brush up on the top 40 scene so I can get information and pretend I have common musical interests with girls I want to sleep with.

Why the $@!& is Izzy Stradlin NEVER listed?

I know he hates the limelight but 4 Guns N' Roses albums (THE 4!) and 10 solo albums!!!!

Everyone do themselves a favour and go on iTunes and get Izzy Stradlin and the Ju Ju Hounds (featuring Ron Wood, Rick Richards and Marc Ford) or ANY Izzy album thats not River.

Seriously, people need to know how solid this guy was/iz (pun intended)
