I love my Mustang--and it takes its turn--both in a regular rotation of my guitars and sometimes even the one I play the most, but I'm more of a humbucker guy--so I'll use those more often--but nothing wrong with having a variety of guitars.

I have two Strats and a Tele right now. My son has a mini-Strat that I play more than he does. I used to be a 100% Gibson man and I'll buy another Les Paul or SG one day but right now it's Fender all the way!!! :D

I get the point of your question but that is why they make pedals. How much louder or more spaced out do you want to get than say Hendrix. Plus you have a wider palate of having a unique tone with single coils as they dress up better than humbuckers. Then there are times I like to plug in a guitar with humbuckers to get that fat creamy tone you can only truly get from a guitar with them. But it is not like you cant pull it off without them. I think you need both in your stable but if I could only have one I would take single coils because you can do a lot more with them. IMO

I play my Strat all the time for everything. In my band we play some modern hard rock songs that require a lot of distortion, but I still use my Strat. The other guitarist plays a Les Paul and when I play a guitar with humbuckers with him it just comes out sounding muddy and terrible, I've found that using the Strat adds more clarity and that ends up making the entire band sound better.

But when I have to play that kind of music and I'm the only guitarist, I'll use my Les Paul just because I need a little more punch in the low/midrange.

Hey, the Strat/Les Paul combo can be a great one.

I notice that a lot of people use strats or teles, and a lot of people say you need at least one strat in your collection, but i notice most people have just one or 2 amongst a much larger collection of humbucking guitars, and most (aside of the obvious SRV, Clapton, Hendrix) world famous guitarists are primarily known for playing gibsons or, in a lot of cases, superstrats. Also whenever fender does video demos they never get beyond clean or that slightly broken up sound. So the question is :

How many people use a typical (ie non humbucking - we'll allow stacked singlecoils) strat for everything?

How many use it when the tone requires it?

Does the srtrat really have a place in the world of rock or will it always be primarily a blues/funk/indie/pop guitar?

Actually, I do just the opposite. I use my Fenders for most everything. I have a Gibson LP and a couple of Epis when I feel a darker tone is called for. Even then, I have a Fender Deluxe Powerhouse Strat that will give me a similar tone and is much easier to play than the LP.

I love Fender guitars. I have owned them since 1979. I own 11 Fenders now. They are wonderful! Now that that is out of the way,
I have never heard ANY Strat sound like my Les Paul Custom with Seymour Duncan SH-4 bridge pickup, big, fat, full, mean.
I have never heard any Strat sound like my Epiphone Sheraton with its smooth, warm, round, honking tone.
I have never heard any Strat sound like my BC Rich Bich with Duncan Invader pickups. SOOOO heavy, fat, gutteral.
I just can't limit myself to the "Fender sound" even tho I love it so much. I love guitars of all makes. I hope to add a PRS soon, for yet another palette of sound. The closest I can get to an all around guitar is my 1990 HSS Strat with EMGs.
And where all of this comes into play is in the studio. Different tools for different jobs. To each his own......
