Time making pronouncements about guitarists makes about as much sense as Guitar Player pontificating on politics. I suggest we ignore this as irrelevant. :?

Prince????? What criteria did Time Magazine based this on?

To me guitar players that changed the way the guitar was played during their time/era and were emulated and have influence other guitar players would be considered pioneers and best guitar players of all time.

These would be the ones that would fit that criteria:

Not necessarily in this order:
1. Les Paul (pioneer in the design of the solid body guitar and recording techniques)
2. Jimi Hendrix (pioneer in new way of playing the electric guitar with the use of fuzz, feedback, and sound effects that identified the 60s psychedelic sound. You hear Hendrix in everyone's playing.) No one played guitar like Hendrix back in the 60s.
3. Edward Van Halen( pioneer in also a different approach to guitar playing in the late 70s, and 80s. Not since Hendrix that one guitar player single handedly influence so many people to take up guitar due to his finger tapping. when the first VH album came out in 78, no one played like Eddie, no guitar solo was like eruption during that time. He also pioneered in modifying guitars and amps, made it popular.
4. Yngwie Malmsteen. (pioneered in influencing players in classical approach to guitar playing with sweeps and arpeggios) Sure, Blackmore and Rand Rhoads had strong classial influence in their playing, but Malmsteen has taken it much further. Young players that play fast, sound like Blackmore, Rhoads or Malmsteen? I would say most sound like Yngview.
Malmsteen came out in the early 80s, first USA band was Steeler. When Mike Varney introduced him to the world, and now every guitar player that play fast sounds like Malmsteen.

This is my opinion and gave the criteria I based it on.
+1 I totaly agree

What a bizarre list...

+1 Obviously not compiled by a guitarist.

Well said.

Also, you can't compare different styles of guitarists across the board to compile such a list. Each musician has their own unique niche. This list is like doing a top 100 list for writers and trying to cover poets, short stories, novels, epics, etc... 8)

I Would like to see a list compiled by just guitar players then you will get some good feedback. It was never my favorite magazine but it was always a solid one. A bit stuffie but Guitar Players issues when they do there galleries of the greats and best guitarist polls and they do all genres, was always serious players and not popularity contest. If you can ever catch an issue when they do this just check out there gallery of greats all I can say is anyone in it with out a doubt belongs there.

Once again, you guys made the subject interesting, read them all (posts) and thanks for the insightful views. my two cents, after checking out the link, Time magazine carefully chose the guitar players based on if they thought their readers could recognize the names on the list. thats why no Abercrombie or Holdsworth or Diddley or Vaughn or Bolin or Vestine or Neilson or whom ever the hundreds of unsung guitar bests might be. Cheers!

Time magazine has compiled a list of the "10 greatest electric guitar players." They are as follows:

01. Jimi Hendrix
02. Slash
03. B.B. King
04. Keith Richards
05. Eric Clapton
06. Jimmy Page
07. Chuck Berry
08. Les Paul
09. Yngwie Malmsteen
10. Prince

I would disagree with this list as well as some that have been suggested for this list so here goes mine:
#1.Jimi Hendrix
#2.BB King
#3.SRV
#4.Les Paul
#5.Rory Gallagher
#6.Roy buchanan
#7.Chet Atkins
#8.Joe Pass
#9.Robert Johnson
#10.Eric Clapton

Slash is good but overrated,EVH is VERY overrated,YM is nothing but a fast but flashy player. I could include Jimmy Page and Chuck Berry on my list as well as James Burton and Albert Collins,Albert and Freddie King, and my others list could go on and on.

I can't believe no one is suggesting Tommy Emmanuel, Seriously! If there was a list of the 10 greatest guitars ever and Tommy was not on the list, then I just don't know what the word greatest means anymore.

Here is a little something to refresh your memory

Different people have different ideas of what constitutes "best". These stupid lists do stir things up though, don't they?

There seems to be quite a few guitarists missing........did somebody already post that opinion?

....and by the way, shouldn't time be reporting events that are shaping the country and world? (not that guitar playing is not important in the world) Must have been a slow week in the newsroom.
