You are correct Prince can play serious guitar!!!! Anyone who says he can't just has not seen or watched him.
I am aware of his playing. Yes, Prince is an exeptional player, but what has he contributed to the guitar community like the likes of Henrdrix, Les Paul, Malmsteen and EVH that influence so many to play like them or set forth a new approach to playing the guitar, as well as changed the way the electric guitar is made (Les Paul and EVH greatly conributed in this area)??

To me guitar players who have strong influences like them, should bare "all time" status.

Here's my list.

People who's opinions of who are the "Greatest Guitarists" effect my buying decisions.

1. Me

... snip ...

Charlie Christian. Chet Atkins. Joe Pass. Danny Gatton. Tal Farlow. Larry Carlton. Alvino Rey. Jim Hall. Tuck Andress. Wes Montgomery. Roy Buchanan. John McLaughlin. George Van Eps. Allan Holdsworth. Pat Metheny. Howard Roberts. Robben Ford.....

You know, it occurs me me that I could make a list of the 100 greatest guitarists, and SRV and Jimi wouldn't even be on it. There are many, many ways to make music with a guitar that have nothing to do with in-your-face overdriven blooze.

THANK YOU :D :D :D

No one from jazz, big band era, blue grass, country, and not much from traditional blues for that matter on their list? It could at best be considered the 10 best rock/rock forerunner guitarists and even that wouldn't be "all time" or an absolute "the best."

In this opinion, that list is largely stupid.

Where are the great jazzers and non-distortion-dependant electric pickers?

What does "great" mean to TIME? Maybe that will clarify their thinking.

Prince is a great guitar player. A lot better than Slash but I still wouldn't have put either of them on the top 10 list. And they completely forgot EVH.

TIME magazine should stick to current events and politics. Obviously music isn't their field of expertise.

Chuck Berry was an innovator. As was EVH and Jeff Beck. Keith Richards too. One of the best Rock and Roll rhythm guitarist on the planet.

Time just sucks as does Rolling Stone magazine. I'm surprised Time didn't put John Mayer on the list.

The Ten Greatest Electric Guitarists!!

I really detest such lists because it's so subjective and pits artists against one another as if we can really say which one is better than some other. I'm even resistant to the idea of "The most influential" lists. Influential to whom? I might create a list of my top ten favorites/most influential, but it wouldn't include Chet Atkins, as someone above posted. Not because he's not incredible or important, but simply because he has yet to show up on my musical radar. All accomplished guitarists should simply be recognized as such, and leave the lists be. How do you know who's accomplished? I can say on a forum that serves musicians that the accomplished musicians are those we're listening to and influenced by. Or is there someone here who wants to cop to imitating a guitarist who sucks? Ugh!

If you made it this far, thanks for reading my rant, and have a good day.

Time magazine has compiled a list of the "10 greatest electric guitar players." They are as follows:

01. Jimi Hendrix
02. Slash
03. B.B. King
04. Keith Richards
05. Eric Clapton
06. Jimmy Page
07. Chuck Berry
08. Les Paul
09. Yngwie Malmsteen
10. Prince

WTF????? WHY IS PRINCE THERE?!!!!!!!!

Prince should be replaced with Eddie Van Halen. This is ridiculous. Here's the new list Robert Miller's Top 10 Guitarists

1. Jimi Hendrix
2. Stevie Ray Vaughan
3. B.B. King
4. Eric Clapton
5. Jimmy Page
6. Les Paul
7. Eddie Van Halen
8. Pete Townshend
9. Robert Johnson
10. Yngwie Malmsteen

You know, trying to come up with any list of "best music" or "best musicians" is a complete waste of time. Music is so subjective, no one could agree on the same top ten list, or even a top 100 list.

Prince is an all around musician the guy can play like 10 instruments well enough to be in a band doing it. He is also an ace guitar player he just does not have a big enough body of guitar work to merit my top 50 players.Chuck Berry for his time period was the man and one of the most important players ever.Slapchop you had me then lost me with the pentatonic remark. John McLaughlin is very much a pentatonic player as is Larry Carlton who would probably prefer to play blues all day than anything else. Sure they go of into modal playing but what I see they love to play best especially Carlton is the blues. But all this is neither here nor there because once you reach a level on the guitar these guys have you cant say really who is the best because the top players would all be able to solo over the same progression. That would be great send out a progression to all the greats and lets see what they all come up with. I would rather have a list of the most innovative players in history.
