So I was asked by a friend that worked at my local guitar shop to jam to some blues with him at the shops annual Jam they have once a year, free for everyone to come and watch, which is pretty popular now ( Lots of people come to watch). Ill be playing the bass for this, So since im still pretty new to this does anyone have any tips, any ideas. Weve jammed on blues before, but Since this time its in front of what could be 100 people I though I would take things a little further, any Ideas? 8)

yeah...improvise always. Go with the flow. All the time man. When me and my friends jam we just improvise, even on songs, make up our own solos and stuff. I'm not a bass player so I don't know any bass techniques or stuff but just improvise. Remember, bands never stick to the original when playing live. Blues is actually very easy too improvise to also. I frequently improvise to Clapton's song Third Degree. But anyway, best of luck my friend. Hope all goes well! 8)

Yup, just take it easy man, a jam is exactly that, A JAM!

Just feel the music and flow with it.
Have a good one!

Put a hat face up on the floor directly in front of you. Maybe you'll make some money too. :D

Listen.
Know the changes.
And remember as the Bass player, you have to supply all beverages, and drive the van.

The hardest part of switching from guitar to bass is remembering that you aren't just playing an extended guitar solo. It's your job to marry the percussion and the melody. You serve the song. Your parts provide the platform for the other instruments to build rhythms, melody, and harmonies over the percussion.

As Twelvebar says, a big danger in going from guitar to bass is trying to do set-long solos. Many of the greats in one way or another have said that in bass, it's often the note you don't play that stands out.

The idea is to hit the groove ... watch the audience, watch the others jamming with you. When you're dead on, you'll just know it.

But of course, don't get so lost in making it all work that you're not having any fun!

Tb is right about the van too ... you as the bass player will have the responsibility of dealing with all the adoring fans who want to go out with him after the jam.

Just relax and have fun. Jam out just like you would at home only just with a band.
