Alright... I confess: I prefer playing guitar and bass with shorter strap lengths because it feels the most ergonomically correct. But I'm afraid I look ridiculous wearing a high-water axe. Do real men think or care about this? What's more important to you, comfort or image? Honestly...

I keep it a tad high myself, helps with the pain in my elbow and wrist.

At this stage in life I want to be comfortable, I don't care if I look funny.

Being only 5ft 2in I have the Fender strap as short as it will go - and I still find my guitar is a little low for optimal comfort!

The bridge sits at the same height as my belt buckle, which is comfortable for me because I usually play with my thumb hooked over the neck.

I like my guitars to hang the same length as when I play them when seated.

Because of my size I need long straps and then the guitars still hang quite high.

The bottom of my bass is around belt level. Sometimes I drop it, say if I'm playing a punk gig I will lower it for the image ( heresy) but most of the time I keep it at a comfortable height.

I play with the bridge a little above my waist, but I angle the guitar's neck up at more of an angle than a lot of people do.

The ideal thing is to have the strap at a length so the guitar is in the same position standing up as when you are sitting down.

I know exactly what you mean! I used to play with the instrument quite low in order to look "cool",but my playing suffered severly for it. As I grew older I came to the realization that I couldn't pass for "cool" if you stuck me in a deep freezer for a month. Now I look like the salvation army, but am perfectly comfortable with it,physically and otherwise.

I tend to change it up.
For easier songs (more power chord/strumming stuff) I keep it really low.
For hard stuff (sweep picking/lots of arpeggios) I take it way up.

So i'm with you on the comfort, but if you can pull off taking it low and playing well, more power to you.
You've just got to find the midpoint.

I prefer my bridge a bit below my belt, but that is because it looks cool to me when standing, but i'm only 14 so i guess thats normal, i do most of my playing sitting down anyway.

I play at the average level also. My belt buckle sits inside the tremelo spring cavity. Another thing is, I just can't play with my guitars neck upwards (the supposedly right way). I have to have the guitar level, any other way feels awkward.

One time for the hell of it, to see what it felt like, I let my strap out all the way to pull a Jimmy Page. I don't know how anybody can play like that, it's just ridiculous.
