If you're going for that Rolling Stones thing, it sounds great. I'm seriously not trying to sound like a wiseguy when I say that you should place the mic wherever it sounds good.

I mean, there's no telling where it's gonna sound best in your space. Most guys will start with an SM57 pretty close to the speaker, off center, and then back it off until it sounds awesome.

BigJay... first of all, there's not a thing wrong with GarageBand. It's a revolutionary tool for home musicians, and I've seen guys produce pro work with it because they wanted to use the Apple Loops. I've got it on my studio machine.

If you want to record the sound of your amp, you need to mic it. An SM57 is a great choice for a first mic... it sounds pretty good on a guitar amp, if you get deeper into recording you'll use it in a hundred ways (just last week I tried micing a cello with a large-diaphragm condenser above the instrument about two feet over the end of the fingerboard, and on a whim planted an SM57 near the floor pointed right at the bottom of the body, to the right of the tailpiece... awesomeness!), you can drive a nail with it and it still works, and it only costs $100 (plus a stand, of course).

I'd buy a 57 (don't buy a cheap one eBay, there are thousands of Chinese fakes on there, and they only look like microphones), a floor stand and a good cable and plug it into the Tascam. Just don't expect Led Zeppelin on the first try, and you'll find where it sounds good.

You can spend more on a mic and get into a large-diaphragm condenser, which will sound great on a guitar cab and also work well for vocals, if you plan to do any singing.

My amp has a powerful output jack for the cabinet. I assume it would be a big mistake to run that to the pre-amp.

Well, even if it didn't blow up the pre's in the Tascam, it would sure sound like hell. :) WAY more juice than the input is looking for.

I don't know if either of those low-power jacks on your amp are line level outputs, which is what your interface would be looking for (is one a headphone jack, maybe?). But even if they did, you'd be recording the sound of the pre-amp only. I personally came to hate the sound of a lone 12ax7 cooking away, and advised everybody I knew to never buy an effects pedal that featured a "glowing" 12ax7 in a little window. That doesn't mean you couldn't get a good sound from it, because people do it... but if you like the sound your amp is making, then micing it with a good mic is the best plan.

Yes, I'm trying to get that classic rock tone...early AC/DC kinda thing. I'm using a raodworn with tex mex pickups and I got comments saying that the tone sounds like I was playing a guitar with P90s. I'll try out your tip about placing the the SM57 off center and pulling back until I get a tone I like.

+1 Listen and you'll see (or rather ..hear) :

*An added thought....you might want to download the *free* trial verson of Amplitude Fender and try the amp models with Garageband?
