Is there a good way to mic a guitar amp using your laptop? I don't like the built in mic in my laptop, Mac Book Pro. I would rather using my Shure 57 mic to capture the tone of the amp. I tried connectiong the Shure 57 directly to the mic input, but it still did not sound any better than the built in condenser mic of the laptop. So what approach should I go for? I would mainly use the webcam of my laptop and use the shure 57 mic for sound for youtube videos.

If the laptop mic sounds as good as the shure then why not use it?

niki, the SM57 wouldn't sound any better because connecting it directly to a computer would mean no pre-amp, and that mic needs a bit of gain to get cooking. tar65, what the heck kind of cable did you find to do that with?

BigJay, there's not a thing wrong with that Tascam. I've recommended cheap convertors like that to dozens of guitar players and VO folks who have asked.

The Tascam is a mic preamp and an A-to-D convertor, and these days even the cheapest pres and convertors sound pretty darn good.

The only reasons to upgrade to a "better" unit would be that you need more simultaneous inputs, or you want to be able to synch to an outside clock, or you need to be able to interface with a digital console or something. But if you're recording one mic at a time straight into your computer with no other digital sources, all those 100-buck desktop units work great.

Can I connect the mic to my Pocket Pod as an alternative usb audio interface or the pocket pod does not have enough juice to power up the shure 57 mic?

And undoubtedly the speaker quality of the laptop is making everything sound the same.

Much better than the cheapo Behringers, I have two and love 'em for vox, guit and bass.

Mike...I'm just getting ready to order it, but I just need a few more question. With that tube preamp, will I have to set the mic/line in level of my Macbook Pro to a low level without boost? I'm concern about blowing my Macbook bulit in sound card. Not really cheap to fix a Macbook or Macs in general.

Also, I found this USB interface for $69.99, as USB will not have to use the onboard sound card of the Macbook pro.

Ohhhhhh, yeah.

Good call.

I've done radical, ugly remixes demanded clients, and when they called me back and said they STILL couldn't hear the bass line, I would suddenly wake up and say, "Hey... what are you listening to these mixes on?"

"My laptop. Why?"
