Happened for me, since starting guitar I've gotten into John Prine and Robert Earl Keen for example, two people I would have never given a thought to before that.

Oh, that my eyes had been opened sooner.

I found that, going right back to the early days when I started playing with bands, my musical tastes became wide and varied.
Searching constantly for new sounds, ideas, any genre that we could use.
It's stuck with me ever since, open to anything. I think you have to be.

Well as I stated a hundred times I grew up with an older brother who collected vinyl and music was blasting since birth. But my brother was really never into the blues or anything real heavy. When I started playing and got a little older my friend Big Rob really got me into the blues and I took it and ran with it. As I think that any serious guitar player has to go through a blues phase which really opens the door to every other road. I especially love an eight bars blues as the solos are so tasty because you have to stray with the changes. Look at Larry Carlton that guy can play anything yet he loves the blues more than anything. Once you become a player your mind is searching for anything that sounds different thats why you will find yourself channel surfing on TV and stopping everytime the minute you see someone playing guitar no matter what kind of music. Am I right?

Thanks everyone for your replies. I guess it must be a normal part as one strives to play an instrument. I go onto Youtube now, or the CD section at a store, etc. and I am excited that I may meet a new band to enjoy that day. It is a quest...this guitar journey...and I've made many friends along this road...local bandmembers, the CDs of new bands I discover for the first time, and all of you guys and gals here on the Forum. Thanks-

yeah same with me. for a while i listened to metal and that was it. after playing the guitar in the mid 90's. i started listening to more classic rock, then i started with the industrial groups then the death groups from europe with the 7-8 string madness lol

now i listen to everything except rap and mindless techno :)

I've always loved all types of music. Playing an instrument, just adds another dimension for me.
